The Hybrid

Chapter One- New Home

You’re a worthless nothing, Zayn, and that’s all you’ll ever be.

Those words have repeated in my head since they were said to me, at age five. Back then I had no idea that it wasn’t normal to have been tested on, to be able to have cat ears and tail. Back then I was still optimistic, still curious and still naïve.

Now, fifteen years later, I stand in fear in front of my master, terrified that I’ve done something wrong. Recently I’ve gotten better at not making so many mistakes, but when I first came here…

“Come on, you filthy animal. Someone else wants you.” Wants me? Ha. More like I’m being shipped off to a new doom.

My master, or ex-master, I guess, jerked sharply on my collar, making me stumble forward after him. After being shoved into the expensive limo, we were driven off to a new property not too far from here.

Half-curious, yet wary, I pricked my ears slightly, feeling my hair falling off my hidden accessories. My tail flicked back and forth on the back of my legs before wrapping tightly around my ankle, instinctively knowing to half-hide my hybrid qualities since most didn’t like them.

After being dragged from the limo to a large front door and shown inside, I lowered my head, keeping my eyes trained on the ground as we walked, only his footsteps and the soft clink of the chain filling the hallway.

We entered another room. Here, I could scent at least four other people than myself and my ex-master.

“Here you are, Tomlinson, a hybrid.” At the word hybrid, my ears flattened again, quickly hiding themselves among my black hair.

“Is he a hybrid, or a boy?” A snippy voice replied. Before anyone said anything, I pricked my ears and flicked my tail out to the side, keeping quiet. “Well, good job Anderson. Now get the hell off my property.”

“Gladly.” My ex-master handed the chain to another man before walking away.

“Look at me, hybrid.” Cautiously, I raised my head and my gaze to the man who had spoken. He wasn’t much older than I was, with light, feathery brown hair and bright blue eyes. I didn’t dare looking him in the eyes, instead settling for the side of his head, almost looking behind him.

“Good. At least he follows directions. Take him off the chain and let him go, I don’t really care what he does, just make sure he doesn’t leave.” He ordered, standing up from the desk and leaving the room.

I quickly dropped my head again, not daring to look at the other occupants in the room, instead warily leaning away from whoever took the chain off my collar.

Feet approached me and a hand found its way under my chin, forcing my head up. I still didn’t directly look at the person- another man, this time with soft blonde hair and blue eyes- only looked over his shoulder.

“Well mate, come along. And quit looking at the ground, nothing that interesting’s down there.” He said, a clear Irish accent stringing through his voice.

“Niall, it’s what he was taught to do. He can’t just stop it.” Another boy said, though I didn’t look over.

“But Liam! It’s bloody annoying when I can’t see past his eyes.” The blonde, Niall, whined, letting go of my chin.

“Give him time.” The other boy, Liam, said. “Now come on, let’s show him around. Harry, why don’t you take him to his room and Niall and I will go get food.”
