Darkness.

That was the first thing she knew.

Not her age.

Not where she was.

Not how she'd gotten there.

Just darkness.

Her eyes snapped open, but it made no difference. Black surrounded her so completely that for one terrifying second, she wondered if she'd even opened them at all.

Then the floor jolted beneath her.

She gasped.

Metal groaned somewhere around her, followed by the violent screech of machinery.

She was moving.

Up.

Her hands scrambled across the floor until her fingers met cold metal. She pushed herself backward, searching blindly for something—anything—to hold onto.

"Hello?"

Her voice came back to her.

Small.

Afraid.

Alone.

"Is someone there?"

Nothing answered.

The metal beneath her feet shuddered again.

She pressed herself against what felt like a wall and tried to breathe.

Think.

She needed to think.

Where was she?

The question should've had an answer.

It didn't.

She searched her mind desperately.

There had to be something.

A house.

A family.

A face.

Anything.

There was nothing.

Her breathing quickened.

She squeezed her eyes shut.

Think.

Who was she?

For one horrifying moment, she couldn't answer that either.

Then—

Elara.

Her eyes opened.

"Elara."

She whispered the name just to hear it.

It felt right.

It belonged to her.

Elara.

That was her name.

But everything after it was gone.

No last name.

No parents.

No home.

No memories.

Just—

Elara.

The metal cage suddenly lurched.

She cried out as her shoulder slammed into the wall.

"Stop!"

As if whoever had trapped her might actually listen.

"Please!"

The machinery continued grinding.
