A World Without Sonic

The Switch

"Ugh... where am I?", Sonic asked himself after his slam on the floor after the fall. However, when he looked around, he saw no differences. "So... I got teleported? Weird...", Sonic thought about it a bit, but then he just ignored it and continued with his life, and looked around, and saw the usual buildings and people. "Guess I gotta tell Amy about this...". As he was walking around, he saw next to no differences, so he was just looking around, hoping to find Amy, but the city was big and he had no way to communicate with her. For now, he just decided to wait and go to a store, since Amy liked going there, but no matter where he went, he couldn't find her. "Where would I be if I was her?", Sonic said to himself, but then after some planning, he gave up, so he decided to head home. However, something unexpected happened.

When he got near it, he specifically remembered his house being light blue (a little narcissistic, but OK), but it was yellow. It couldn't have been a prank. It was too basic for Eggman. He would break something, not paint it a random color. Then, he ran to find Amy again and by pure miracle, he found her.

As he saw Amy, she waved at him, so he waved back, but what she said confused him. "I'm sorry, sir. I was waving at my friend, Rouge. Sorry to bother you.", Amy said to him in her usual positive tone. "Hey, wait up!", Amy said loudly as she ran up to Rouge and they chatted on their way to a fashion building. This is when Sonic mentally jumped a little. Did she call him "Sir"? Never in his life did Amy call him Sir. That's when he knew something was off. He hoped the worst-case scenario was not happening, so he asked someone he met a couple of times. "Hi, do you know who Sonic is?", Sonic said, hoping to get an answer involving him. "Nope, never heard of him. Try asking my friend over there.", the guy said, pointing at his friend. He quickly asked the guy's friend, but he also said he had no clue, and he tried again, getting nervous. He tried 3 more times, and it was the same result. This confirmed it. He was somewhere where he never belonged. This started to overwhelm him a bit, so he took a stroll in a forest.

"Alright, Sonic, keep it together. You can fix it. Just bring them all together again.", he said optimistically, but he was cut off by hearing a kid yelling and he checked where it came from. He then noticed it was Tails, but he was bullied like he used to back then. "What... is happening?", Sonic said to himself in curiosity again before showing up and scaring the bullies away, but instead of saying, "Thanks, Sonic!", Tails ran away into the woods, which broke Sonic, since Tails would never run away and leave him alone, scared. This caused Sonic to slowly walk to a stump and put his head down. "No one knows me, Tails is afraid of me, and Amy doesn't care about me... I bet their lives are settled without me. It feels like no one needs me...", said Sonic, giving up and about to run away for good and make a new life somewhere else before he saw a careful Tails walk up to him. "Hedgehog, if I broke your feelings, I'm sorry. I didn't mean to.", Tails went up to him. "Thank you for helping me. I'm Miles.", he said as Sonic stood up. "Thanks for coming, Ta-", Sonic said in a calm, but happy tone before being interrupted. "Don't ever call me Tails. I don't want that name to stay with me.", Ta... Miles said to him in a slightly angry tone. "Sorry, T... Miles. Sorry, Miles. My name is Sonic.", he introduced himself, but Miles simply nodded. "Glad to meet you, Sonic.". "So, what were you doing while you were walking around?", Miles asked, but in a neutral tone, since he doesn't know who Sonic is really. Sonic couldn't explain what happened, because he would sound like a nutcase.

"Well, I'm... not from around here, so I was taking a stroll, trying to clear my mind from stuff that's been happening recently. It feels like the world doesn't care about me right now.", Sonic said to him. "sigh I get you. I feel that way, too. I feel abandoned. Say, since you helped me out, can I be with you for a while? For safety?", Miles asked, worried the bullies would come back. "Of course! Leave it to me, Miles. Say, this place is quite peaceful. Has Dr. Eggman caused trouble recently?", asked Sonic, hoping nothing triggered Miles again, but what he heard was quite interesting. "I don't know who you're talking about... Wait! Dr... Dr... You mean Dr. Robotnik? Not really. I can explain what happened if you want.", Miles responded and Sonic was intrigued in what he was going to say. "About 3 years ago, he caused a war named The Great Cyber War, which was catastrophic, but neither side won, so our government and he signed a ceasefire, and we have had zero trouble ever since. We did have to rebuild for about 2 years, but everything is fine now. Now, we have our side and he has his own country filled with everything that is his, named Robotiland.", Miles kept explaining, happy Sonic was listening to his story. "People have gone there, but you are essentially held at laserpoint if you try to leave your permitted area or break the rules.".

"That sounds like a pause, not an end.", Sonic said to him, a little dissapointed that it was never fully settled. "I guess it's better than what I experienced. Some other bad guy kept attacking in my place and never stopped.", Sonic said to Miles, cleverly hiding the full truth. This made his think, though. Was it his fault Eggman is so aggressive? His made him stop and think, but to Miles, he looked like he was daydreaming. "Umm... Mobius to Sonic... Helloooooo...", Miles said to him, waving his hand in front of him. "Sorry. I- uh... got a little distracted... Anyways, you seem great to be with, Miles. I myself have a few stories to tell. A while ago, I stopped a huge water monster from destroying the world. Me and... other people... worked together and stopped it, but it did cause a flood, so it only half worked, but the world was saved, but to avoid worry and panic, the people there decided not to show it to the public here, so no one knows it except me and you. Also, between you and me, I also know how to spindash.", Sonic explained the short story and said the end in a whisper. "You do, too? That's awesome! I thought I was the only one.", Miles said, ecstatic. "You have made my day. Thank you, Sonic!", Miles said to him as he hugged him. As they walked to where Miles lived, Sonic noticed something weird. Miles had one tail. He hoped nothing bad would happen if he commented about it. "Miles... What happened to your other tail?", Sonic said, worried about him. "Normally, I would be furious about that question, but since I trust you, I'll tell you. Using my inventions, I gave myself a painless surgery to take one off. I had it with the bullying, which was far worse before, but I still have it in my cave as a memory of the past.". As he finished, Sonic took one thing that interested him. "So, you live in a cave?", Sonic asked, feeling bad for him. "Yeah, follow me."

As they walked to that cave, Sonic noticed it had flowers around it, might as well make the cave pretty. As they went inside, Miles gave him a cave tour. "So, welcome to my home! Here is the wood I use to cook my food, here's my steel slab I use as a pan, here's the fridge I found nearby. On that corner is my dirt bed with a blanket I stole, and this is my little figurine I sleep with! I can't believe I finally have a friend!", Miles sounded really happy showing Sonic his struggling life. "This is a nice cave, but... you have been living in a cave all your life?", asked Sonic, concerned about him. "Well, yeah. When everyone hates you, why would you bring attention to yourself? I use this cave as a way to hide from all my problems. It hurts to even think what would happen if this cave gets wrecked. Say, if you don't have a home, you can stay here.", Miles said, sounding defeated. "Miles, I promise you I will protect you.", Sonic said in a serious tone, looking at him, and patting Miles's head while smiling. "Please don't pat my head, but... thank you.", Miles said as he moved away from the hand. "How can I fix this? Should I tell him?", Sonic thought to himself. "Guess we should relax for now. So, tell me, how did you find this cave?". "I was relaxing near a bush, but then I heard the same people that hated me, and they were looking for me. Thanks to panic, I ran into this cave and noticed how spacious it was, so I used this place as an escape whenever they were looking for me, but I failed sometimes.", Miles explained in a neutral tone.

"Well, uh... I can help you possibly find a better place, buddy.", Sonic said to him, in his usual tone toward Miles, but then he realized he slipped, but he was lucky that Miles didn't notice it too much. "For now, you can stay right here.", Sonic said to Miles with a smirk as he ran away. "Whoa..." was all that Miles said.

As Sonic ran back to the city, he found Tails and gained his trust. Time to find someone else.
