Long before the wedding.

Long before the house overlooking the fields.

Long before the years of distance and the struggles that tested their family and their community...

There were two children sitting beneath an old balete tree.

The afternoon sun was slowly disappearing behind the rolling hills of their quiet barangay outside Cagayan de Oro.

Elizabeth sat on the grass, holding a small wildflower between her fingers.

Beside her was James.

They had spent the entire afternoon running through the fields, sharing snacks, and talking about the future as if the future were something they could already understand.

"James," Elizabeth suddenly said.

"Hm?"

"When we grow up, do you think we'll still be friends?"

James looked at her as if the question were strange.

"Of course."

"What if we live far away?"

"I'll come back."

"What if you forget me?"

James shook his head.

"I won't."

Elizabeth smiled.

"Promise?"

James held out his little finger.

"Promise."

She hooked her finger around his.

"Promise."

Neither of them knew how difficult keeping that promise would become.

They didn't know that James would one day leave the barangay to find work in Manila.

They didn't know Elizabeth would stay behind and stand with their neighbors when their community was threatened.

They didn't know that distance would test them.

They didn't know that life would force them to grow up faster than they expected.

They only knew one thing.

They didn't want to lose each other.

Years later, James would return to the same barangay carrying more than a suitcase.

He would bring documents, sacrifices, memories, and the determination to protect the home he had once left behind.

Elizabeth would discover that the boy who promised to return had become a man capable of keeping his word.

And together, they would learn that love wasn't simply about waiting for someone.

It was about choosing each other when life became difficult.

It was about standing beside one another without losing who they were.

It was about building something instead of simply wishing for it.

And eventually, beneath that same sky, they would stand before their families, friends, and neighbors and say two simple words:

"I do."

But before there was a wedding...

There was a promise.

Before there was a home...

There was a dream.

And before James and Elizabeth became husband and wife...

They were simply two children beneath an old balete tree, believing that somehow, no matter how far life carried them-

they would find their way back to each other.
