Chapter 1: Recover
It has been twelve years since I was kidnapped, and during that traumatic time, Jordan came to my rescue, saving me from that monster. Ever since that day, Jordan and I have developed an incredibly strong bond; she has become like a big sister to me. I can confide in her about anything without fear of being judged, which is something I truly cherish in our friendship.
In addition to my connection with Jordan, I also share a wonderful relationship with my mom. Our bond has only strengthened over the years, and I appreciate how supportive she has always been. My older half-brother, James, is another important figure in my life. He stepped up to support my mom when I was taken, and his presence brought some comfort during that difficult time. However, it's worth noting that James and my dad have never really gotten along, which adds a layer of complexity to our family dynamics.
Through everything we have experienced, I am grateful for the love and support that surround me, especially from my mom and Jordan. Their unwavering presence has played a crucial role in my healing process and has helped shape the person I am today.

My mom and dad have been struggling to get along ever since my older half-sister Star passed away. The tension between them is palpable, particularly because my dad holds my mom responsible for Star's death. While I understand my dad's grief, I don't entirely agree with him. In fact, I can't help but think that the blame should lie elsewhere. Star had always been a bit of a spoiled brat, and my dad tended to indulge her every whim. He would give her whatever she asked for, reinforcing her belief that she was entitled to everything.
One particular incident stands out in my mind. When Star wanted my dad to buy her a car, my mom took a stand. She believed it wouldn't be fair for him to buy her a car without also considering my siblings and me. I completely agree with her on this point. I've been working really hard to save up for my own car, and I believe that Star should have learned the importance of earning her own way too.
The real tragedy, however, is that the one person my dad should truly blame for Star's death is Steve Wilson—the man who was responsible for the murder that took her life. Unfortunately, the police didn't have enough evidence to charge Steve with murder, and this only fueled my dad's anger and frustration. In an attempt to console him, I reminded him that at least Steve is facing consequences for the tragic death of another woman, Jean Woods. Yet, despite my efforts, it seems my dad is still overwhelmed with grief and frustration, and I find myself feeling helpless in knowing how to support him during this difficult time. I wish there was something more I could do to ease his pain and bridge the growing divide between my parents.
I was waiting for my friend Jordan and her boyfriend, Paul, to arrive for lunch. We had been looking forward to this outing for a while. Jordan was about to embark on a new chapter in her life—she and Paul were getting married soon, and I had the honor of being her bridesmaid. It was meant to be a celebratory day, but I couldn't shake off the uneasy feeling that had settled in my stomach.
As I sat at the table, nervously tapping my fingers against the surface, Jordan walked in with Paul. She immediately noticed the frown on my face and her smile faltered. "What's wrong?" she asked, her voice laced with concern.
I sighed, feeling the weight of my worries creeping back in. "It's my parents again," I admitted, my voice barely above a whisper. "They've been fighting nonstop. My dad is being so difficult with my mom. I get that he's still struggling with the loss of my sister Star, but it's not fair for him to take his anger out on her. It feels like he's blaming her for something she had no control over."
Jordan nodded sympathetically. "That must be incredibly hard to deal with."
I continued, "Star had her flaws—she could be spoiled and demanding. I hate speaking ill of her since she's gone, but it's true. She always asked Dad for money, and he would give in to her every time, which only infuriated my mom. She always thought Star should take responsibility and find a job instead of relying on Dad for everything. My brother, James, feels the same way as Mom, and honestly, I do too. It's just a mess right now. Mom is staying at my apartment because she needed a break, and I'm genuinely worried this constant fighting could lead to their divorce."
Jordan's expression turned serious. "Casey, I genuinely hope that doesn't happen. Your mom deserves happiness. Your dad has treated her poorly for a long time, even before Star's tragic death," she said gently.
"I know, and I completely agree with you," I replied, the sadness in my voice evident. "I think it's time I have a serious conversation with my dad. He needs to understand how his actions are affecting everyone around him."
"You really do need to talk to him," Jordan encouraged. "It won't be easy, but it might be the only way to help your family heal."
Taking a deep breath, I nodded. I knew it was necessary, but I couldn't help feeling anxious about how it would all unfold.
