Three years.
That was how long the world had been quiet.
Too quiet.
The Black Rose mansion stood high above the city, larger than it had ever been.
The gates were reinforced.
The guards had doubled.
The empire had expanded beyond anything Keys had once imagined.
And inside the mansion—
A three-year-old little girl sat on the floor.
Her name was Aurelia Vale.
She had her mother's eyes.
Her father's attitude.
And a darkness neither of them could explain.
A doll sat untouched in the corner.
But Aurelia wasn't interested in dolls.
She was surrounded by the harmless, non-functional toy replicas of the weapons displayed throughout the Black Rose world, arranging them across the floor like they were pieces of a kingdom.
Kade stood in the doorway.
Arms crossed.
Watching her.
Aurelia looked up.
"Daddy."
Kade raised an eyebrow.
"Yes?"
"Where Mommy?"
"Meeting."
Aurelia frowned.
"Again?"
Kade smiled.
"Your mother runs half the world."
Aurelia looked down at her toys.
"One day I run all of it."
Kade's smile disappeared.
Not because he didn't believe her.
Because somewhere deep inside him—
he did.
Aurelia picked up a black toy pistol and pointed it dramatically toward the ceiling.
"Bang."
Kade immediately took it from her hand.
"Not like that."
Aurelia looked offended.
"You say bang too."
Kade stared at her.
From the hallway, Mozain burst out laughing.
"She's got you there."
Kade turned.
"Auntie Mozain, don't encourage her."
Mozain walked into the room.
"She doesn't need encouragement."
Aurelia looked up at Mozain.
"Grand-Auntie."
Mozain smiled.
"Yes, troublemaker?"
"Mommy scary?"
Mozain laughed.
"Very."
Aurelia thought for a moment.
