Beneath the Surface

Above, the ocean glitters bright,
Beneath the golden morning sun.
The waves are painted blue and light,
And fish swim where the waters run.

The dolphins leap, the sea birds fly,
And colorful creatures drift below.
The shallow waters catch the eye,
Where sunlight reaches every glow.

But deeper down, where light grows thin,
Another world begins to wake.
A quiet kingdom hidden in,
The darkness underneath the waves.

There, strange creatures softly roam,
Through waters cold and vast and deep.
They make the ocean their own home,
In places sunlight cannot reach.

Some carry lights upon their heads,
Some shimmer faintly in the blue.
Some hide among the ocean beds,
Where few have ever seen them move.

They do not dance beneath the sun,
Or splash where people gather near.
Their lives go on when day is done,
Unnoticed by the world up here.

While everyone looks toward the shore,
And marvels at the waves above,
The creatures deep below explore
A world untouched by human love.

Perhaps they do not need to shine
For everyone who looks to see.
Perhaps a life can still be bright
Even when hidden quietly.

The ocean holds more than we know,
More stories than the surface shows.
For every creature seen below,
There may be a hundred no one knows.

And so I wonder, as I stare
At waves that sparkle in the sun:
How many worlds are hidden there,
Still living quietly as one?

Perhaps the deepest parts of blue
Are not empty, dark, or bare.
Perhaps they simply wait for those
Who take the time to look beneath the surface.
