How do you tell someone you've always loved that you're too terrified to let them keep your heart?

How do you explain that the safest place you've ever known is also the one thing capable of destroying you completely?

I know this is all my fault. I was foolish enough to believe I could control the boundaries of my own soul. I convinced myself that what Ara and I built—the quiet evenings in her townhome after long, exhausting days working together at the same place, the unspoken understanding, and eventually, the feverish intimacy we surrendered to under the covers—was just a safe harbor. A sanctuary where neither of us could get hurt.

We had an unspoken agreement: keep it safe, keep it contained, and never let it progress to the next level where hearts could be broken.

I knew every inch of her body as well as she knew mine. I knew the exact rhythm of her heartbeat against my cheek, the sweet scent of her honey-and-ginger soap, and the way her dark eyes softened only when she looked at me.

Karalyn Araeta Utari. She was my colleague, my protector, and the center of my universe. And I loved her with a ferocity that terrified me to my very core.

But I was too cowardly to admit it—even to myself. Because I already knew what love felt like, and more importantly, I knew the agonizing, hollow ruin it leaves behind when it's ripped away. I had lived through a nightmare of loss before, bleeding out in silence until I rebuilt myself piece by painful piece. I swore I would never surrender to love again. If I let myself love Ara, and I lost her... I knew I wouldn't survive it a second time.

So I hid behind my walls. I pretended that what we had was enough.

Until that late afternoon when summer break finally arrived. The relentless schedules and pressure of working together melted away, replaced by the deep quiet of her townhome. After the heat between us finally settled into a serene, quiet calm, Ara lay beside me under the throw blanket, her face illuminated by the faint silver moonlight filtering through the blinds.

She reached out, gently caressing my cheek, her dark eyes fixed on mine with an overwhelming, vulnerable intensity that made the air in the room feel dense and quiet.

"Jill..." Ara whispered softly, her voice trembling slightly with an emotion she could no longer contain.

I smiled warmly, turning my head to kiss her palm. "Hmm?"

Ara took a quiet, deep breath, her eyes holding mine with absolute, unfiltered raw truth.

"I love you."

The three words hung in the air—heavy, sacred, and unmistakable.

Instantly, a cold, violent shockwave tore through my chest.

The serene warmth vanished in a single second, replaced by a suffocating, blinding wave of pure panic. The word love shattered the safe perimeter I had so carefully constructed. The terrifying ghosts of my past loss roared back to life, screaming that surrender meant inevitable destruction.

If I love her, she can destroy me. If I surrender, I won't survive losing love a second time.

My breath caught violently in my throat. The room seemed to tilt, the walls closing in on me like a trap.

"Jill?" Ara asked, her expression instantly shifting from open devotion to quiet alarm as she felt my body go rigid beneath her touch. "Jill, what's wrong?"

"I... I can't," I gasped, my voice thin, frantic, and barely recognizable.

I violently pulled back from her arms, untangling myself from the throw blanket as if it were burning my skin.

"Jill, wait—" Ara sat up quickly, reaching out for my hand, her voice laced with desperate concern. "Talk to me. Please."

"No!" I panicked, backing away from the sofa, my chest heaving as tears of sheer terror filled my eyes. "I can't do this, Ara! I can't let myself fall in love with you!"

My hands shook so violently I could barely pull my shirt over my head. My heart beat like a sledgehammer against my ribs, screaming at me to run, to escape before my soul was completely consumed by the sheer depth of what I felt for her.

"Jill, please, just breathe—we can take it slow—" Ara pleaded, standing up, completely raw, vulnerable, and unravelling in the moonlight.

"Don't come near me!" I sobbed, backing toward the front door. "I'm sorry... I'm so sorry..."

I snatched my tote bag from the entryway table, threw open the heavy front door, and fled out into the cool Bandung night.

Behind me, I caught a fleeting glimpse of Ara standing in the entryway—her posture completely shattered, her broad shoulders slumped, her dark eyes brimming with a profound, agonizing heartbreak. The woman who had always been an unshakeable fortress looked utterly destroyed, her soul laid bare and crushed by the very person she had tried to love.

I slammed the door shut, cutting off the sight of her ruin, and ran down the driveway into the dark. Tears blinded my eyes as suffocating guilt and panic clawed at my lungs. I was drowning in my own chaotic storm, fleeing the very love I wanted more than life itself, leaving the woman I cherished most broken in the dark.

You might judge me. You might ask how I could crush the heart of the woman who held me through my darkest hours. But to understand why I ran, you have to understand the ghosts that haunt me.

My name is Jillian Oriana Janae. And this is my story.
