Finally, the day Katy had been counting down to for weeks had arrived—her birthday.

The sunlight spilled through the curtains of her bedroom, painting soft golden streaks across the walls. Colorful balloons floated lazily near the ceiling, and neatly wrapped presents sat on her desk, waiting to be opened. The sweet scent of vanilla birthday cake still lingered in the air after her parents had surprised Katy with breakfast and an early celebration before leaving for the rest of the day.

Katy's parents had one simple rule for this birthday party: only her closest friends were allowed to come over. No classmates she barely spoke to. No acquaintances invited out of obligation. Just the people who genuinely mattered, because her parents had to leave and didn't want a rave party going on while they were away.

Honestly, Katy preferred it that way.

So she invited the five people who had become her second family.

Lisa, whose loud laugh could brighten even the dullest afternoon. Ji-eun, Katy's best friend since childhood and the person who knew almost every secret she had ever kept. Jungkook, the energetic troublemaker who somehow managed to turn every ordinary moment into an adventure. Taehyung, effortlessly charming with his playful smile and unpredictable personality.

And then

Yoongi.

The one person who made Katy's heart race without even trying.

He was Ji-eun's older brother and had been best friends with Jungkook and Taehyung for as long as Katy could remember. Since she practically lived at Ji-eun's house after school, it was only natural that she got to know him too.

At first, he had simply been "Ji-eun's older brother"—quiet, reserved, usually hidden away in his room with headphones on or a guitar resting in his lap.

But over the years, that image slowly changed.

The more time they spent around each other, the more Katy noticed the little things no one else seemed to pay attention to. The faint smile that escaped whenever Ji-eun said something ridiculous. The calm way he listened instead of speaking. The quiet kindness hidden beneath his seemingly cold expression.

He rarely sought attention, yet somehow he always managed to draw hers.

Somewhere between shared dinners at Ji-eun's house, movie nights, and casual conversations that lasted longer than either of them expected, Katy's innocent admiration had turned into something much deeper.

A crush.

One she had been hopelessly trying to hide for what felt like forever.

Now, in just a few hours, he would be standing in her living room, celebrating her birthday alongside everyone else.

The thought alone sent a wave of nervous excitement fluttering through her stomach.

"Get it together," Katy muttered under her breath.

It was just a birthday party.

...Right?

Right.

Katy slipped away after breakfast from the living room and hurried upstairs to her bedroom, shutting the door behind her with a quiet click. The muffled sounds of her parents leaving faded into silence, leaving her alone with the mess she had created.

Her bed had disappeared beneath piles of clothes.

A floral dress lay crumpled beside a pair of ripped jeans. A soft pastel sweater hung from the edge of her chair, while three different skirts were scattered across the floor. It looked less like a bedroom and more like a clothing store after a tornado.
