sigh.
"C'mon Y/n, tell me what's wrong." Linda gently asked, glancing at her daughter leaning her head against the car window.
"Nothing is wrong, Mom." Y/n replied, half lying.
"Seriously, I'm your mother, I always know when you're thinking too hard."
"I didn't even say anything." Y/n countered, furrowing her eyebrows as she stared too hard out the window, crossing her arms.
"It's all over your face, sweetie. That sigh said everything."
Y/n didn't reply. She knew her Mother was right. She always was.
And to admit it, she was thinking hard.
"Y/n, you should be excited. Come on, moving to the most prestigious University in Cuba? That's huge, babe!" Linda noted, trying to lift the mood.
In all honesty, although Linda was happy for her daughter, she couldn't help but to feel a little bittersweet.
Y/n was moving thousands of miles away for a program until the end of August, for 12 months.
Sure, she was coming back, but it doesn't mean she'll miss her any less.
"I am excited, Mom. I'm just..." Y/n felt a mix of emotions.
On the positive side, she was excited, ecstatic even. She couldn't wait to make new friends, go around the new country, become her own woman.
But on the other hand, she was nervous. Scared. She didn't want to leave her Mother home alone for a whole year.
She had to restart everything.
New friends, new campus, new school.
This trial isn't just to try something new.
It was a test.
If the University thought Y/n was a good fit for them, she would be offered a scholarship to start the next year, which would change her life forever.
"I know sweetie. But it's gonna be good. And I can assure you, you will have the best time of your life, and I'm just so unbelievably proud of you my girl." Linda said comfortingly, offering a soft smile as she took her daughter's hand and rested it on the middle console.
Y/n smiled back, the comfort reaching her.
"And you know who else would be proud, Y/n?" Linda asked.
"Who?"
"Your father."
Y/n looked out the car window, into the sunny, clear sky.
"You think so?"
"I know so."
By the time Linda and Y/n reached the airport, Y/n already broke her promise of not crying anymore by letting her tears escape as she watched her mother trying not to cry at the entrance.
"-and don't forget to call me every single night, I don't care about the time zones-"
"I will, Mom."
"And make sure to keep your things safe, your passport, your documents-"
"I know, Mom."
"And be safe, it's good to make new friends but don't let random people-"
Y/n wrapped her arms around her Mother to muffle the sounds from her mouth.
"I know, Mom."
"Okay... good." Linda let out a shaky sigh, cupping her daughters face with a bittersweet smile.
"I am... so proud of you, my little girl. I know you're gonna do amazing things in Cuba."
Y/n smiled back, putting her hands over her Mothers'.
"Thanks Mom. I love you."
"I love you too, sweetie." Linda kissed Y/n's cheek before letting her go, snapping one more selfie, saying, 'The 'gram needs to see this.', which made Y/n chuckle softly as she walked away.
Y/n made her way through the Airport, and when she finally settled into her boarding terminal seat, she got a call from her best friend waiting in Cuba.
"Y/N!"
Y/n chuckled softly at her friends' eagerness.
"Hey, Thalia."
"I still can't believe you're coming here! The room is already ready for you, and I already know we're gonna have so much fun!"
Y/n laughed, leaning back against her chair.
"Calm down now, I still have a flight to catch."
"I'm gonna be waiting right in front of the escalator when you arrive, you have no idea how ecstatic we are."
"We?"
"Oh right... I may or may have not basically told half the school that my best friend from Australia is coming..."
"Thalia."
"Yes?"
"Why?"
"Because! You're such an amazing person, and everyone deserves to be prepared for what's coming next."
"That's the most pathetic reason I've ever heard."
"Whatever!"
They talked for a few minutes before the speaker announced the passengers to start boarding.
"Oh, Y/n! Before you go, one of my friends in my class, Daniela, is gonna be staying in my other guest room with us."
"Oh... okay. Is she nice?"
"Well... she's... how do you say this... she's a very particular person. It takes a while for her to open up to someone new, and she's more focused on her academics than her friends, so she might come off a little biatchy to you, but shes still super nice!"
"Right... well, I'm chill with whatever."
"Of course you are. Anyway, go board that flight, I'll be waiting for you first thing in the morning."
"I'm arriving at night, I still have a layover flight."
"You know what I mean!"
Y/n chuckled softly into her phone before hanging up, needing to move up with the line of people boarding the plane.
Once she settled into her plane seat by the window, she put in her wired earphones and clicked on her favorite artist before closing her eyes.
Noah Kahan.
The opening notes of End of August came on, and she instantly felt at ease.
This was gonna be a long 40 hours.
