Eight years ago, Lucy Chen had no idea that one random night would eventually change her life.
At the time, it was just a Friday night.
A Friday night she hadn't even wanted to go out for.
"Lucy, you cannot spend every Friday night studying."
Lucy looked up from her phone.
"I wasn't studying."
Angela raised an eyebrow.
"You were reading."
"That's different."
"No, it isn't."
Lucy sighed and looked around the crowded bar.
Music played loudly through the speakers, people were laughing everywhere, and the entire place smelled like perfume, food, and whatever was being poured behind the counter.
This definitely wasn't where Lucy wanted to be.
Angela had practically dragged her there after work, insisting that she needed to relax.
"You're young," Angela had said. "You should actually have fun sometimes."
Lucy had rolled her eyes.
Now Angela had disappeared into the crowd.
Typical.
Lucy picked up her drink and took a small sip.
She glanced around again.
That's when she noticed him.
He was sitting alone at the bar.
Dark shirt. Serious expression. One hand around his glass.
He looked completely out of place.
Everyone else seemed to be having the time of their lives.
He looked like he was counting the minutes until he could leave.
Lucy smiled to herself.
Then she realized he was looking directly at her.
Their eyes met.
Lucy immediately looked away.
Great.
She stared very intensely at her drink as if it suddenly contained the secrets of the universe.
"Interesting drink?"
Lucy froze.
She slowly looked to her side.
The man from the bar was standing there.
"What?"
He nodded toward her glass.
"You've been staring at it for about five minutes."
Lucy glanced down.
"I have?"
"Yeah."
She laughed awkwardly.
"Maybe it's more interesting than the people here."
He looked around.
"Fair point."
That made her laugh.
"You don't seem like you're enjoying yourself either."
"I wasn't aware I was supposed to."
Lucy smiled.
"So you didn't want to come?"
"No."
"Me neither."
He looked at her.
