Handing out flyers was the worst part of being in the circus, at least for myself. It was tedious and frustrating, because most people ignored us, wrinkling their noses or rolling their eyes as they passed by, made worse as I couldn't even speak. I forced a practiced smile on my face, knowing after all these years it looked genuine.

Occasionally, handing out flyers was even dangerous. There were those who grew angry by our presence. They thought us strange, even dangerous, and they were right, but only to some. I knew it was too much to ask for acceptance, but what about just mere tolerance?

A man approached me, and I recognized the look in his eyes. He began to shout at me about how he wanted me gone. I blocked out his words, bracing myself for the strike I knew was coming. Sure enough, I was punched in the face surprisingly hard, enough to knock me down. Usually Harlequin would step in, much to my humiliation, but he was too far down the street to notice. I had no choice but to sit there and take it until the man exhausted himself and gave up. I wrapped my arms around my stomach, protecting myself against the impending violence.

Suddenly, and to my complete shock, a woman's voice spoke from right above me, and she was defending me. I saw wavy brown hair swaying gently in the breeze, and I caught her scent; vanilla with a hint of citrus, along with the natural warmth of her skin. It was mouthwatering, and I swallowed hard.

She threatened to call the police, and that was enough to frighten the man off. He stormed away, and she turned and looked down at me. I suppressed a gasp.

She was the most beautiful creature I had ever seen. Her features were small and delicate, her eyes a wide, clear blue. Her skin was smooth and looked so incredibly soft. I had the sudden urge to lick her.

She held out her small hand and gave me a gentle smile. My heart skipped a beat, and I lost my breath for a moment. No human had ever given me a genuine smile before.

"Here, let me help you up."

I couldn't believe it. She wasn't afraid of me? I slowly reached up, and she grasped my hand firmly, wrapping the other around my wrist. Even through my glove, I could feel my skin burning at her touch. She took a step back and pulled, and I bent my knees and stood. Her eyes widened as she looked up at me. I towered over her. Would that scare her?

"Are you okay?" She asked, her voice full of concern.

I nodded, a big smile breaking over my face. She still wasn't afraid. In fact, her eyes roamed over me curiously. I felt a thrill shoot through my body.

"Some people are kind of hot headed. Better not get too close, just in case, you know?"

I nodded again, wishing I could speak to her.

Her eyes fell to my cheek, and she winced. "Oof, he got you pretty good. Here, I'm almost positive I have a bandage in my purse." She began to rummage through it, and after a moment, pulled out a bandaid. She peeled it open and reached up, but then hesitated.

"Um, will you let me put this on your cheek?"

I nodded eagerly. Was she actually going to touch my skin?

She stood on her toes and gently pressed the bandage over my cheek, smoothing it down with her elegant fingers. The tips brushed against my face, and my heart started pounding. I didn't even know her name, but an emotion was surging through me at her touch that I had never felt before. It was all consuming, spreading through my veins like fire, heating me from the inside out. It was like she had reached right through me and marked my soul, making it hers. I knew right then I would never be the same.

She was so close, her scent overwhelmed me. I could barely keep myself from pulling her into my arms. Would that finally scare her? Or maybe, just maybe...no, it was far too soon.
