I work in a game rental store. It's owner is an older guy; Mr. Brooklyn, he's a good man. Pays me well, keeps the store stacked... Even though it's going bankrupt, and he pays for the store more than he makes from it.

But... Well- at least I get paid. Despite the fact that I barely do anything during the day... I kinda hope it doesn't close soon. I like this job...

Because I get to slack off all day.

And this is what I'm doing right now.

I'm sitting behind the counter, slumped in the somewhat comfortable, old chair... I have to tel Mr. Brooklyn that it creaks a lot though.

I'm scrolling through social media on my phone, these short videos helping me to kill my time here.

Suddenly, I hear footsteps coming from the backroom. I raised my gaze up, seeing my co-worker carry a few games and walking up to the desk.

She is a young girl— around seventeen, with short ginger hair, multiple freckles on her face and blue eyes. She got the job lately, and it's just because the owner was pitying her. She was desperate to make any kind of money...

„Hey- Can you stock up a few games?" She asks, putting exactly three thin boxes with CD's or cartridges for three different consoles. „I have to call my mom, sorry I can't do it," She added with a small sigh, her voice carrying a slight accent.

As she stood beside the desk, I could smell the faint fruity-smoke from her hoodie... Kids these days don't know it's cooler to smoke regular cigarettes.

„Yeah, no worries, Alice," I say, putting down my phone and taking the boxes in my hand.

„Thanks, uh..." she paused, waiting for me to remind her of my name.

„Y/N," I say, a small smile forming on my face.

„Right! Y/N— thanks a lot," she answered, mirroring my smile before dissapearing back into the backroom.

Despite how young she is, she's nice. And helpful. You barely see people her age being like this...

I let out a tiny sigh, as if already exhausted from the extremely hard task of putting up some games, and then went to do my job for once.

One game for the Xbox shelf... Second one on the PlayStation, and the third on the Nintendo one...

As I stand up from my crouch after placing the game on its spot, I jump up hearing a voice right next to me.

„Excuse me-„ A guy's voice spoke up, but he paused after he saw me jump from surprise.

Damn- I didn't even notice him. The bell of the door didn't even ring as it should...

„Sorry-„ he said with a soft huff of something like laughter, taking a small step back from me.

„It's fine, I didn't see you..." I say, mirroring his huff before looking at him more properly. „Uh- what can I help you with?"

The guy is a bit shorter than me. Despite that, he doesn't seem young... Something around his twenties, maybe a bit younger. He was wearing a dark navy sweatshirt with a black shirt underneath it and some jeans. His sweatshirt was zipped up to the half, and the hood was loosely around his head. From under it- peeked out blonde streaks of hair, and behind them, were sharp dark green eyes that had slight eyebags under them.

„I wanted to ask if you guys had any games for the Nintendo 64 console?" He asked gently, slight nervoussment seeping into his voice as he probably saw my raised eyebrows.

Well- I couldn't help it... I felt surprised that a guy this young wanted to buy games for a console this old.

„Hm," I hum in quick thought. „I... Think we do," I say, crouching back down. Under the shelf with the games, we had drawers for stuff that just was too old to keep it up.

I slide open the drawer, rummaging through it in search for any games for this console... But I can't help my curiosity.

„You know, buying games this old is a bit of a challange," I say, my voice having an unspoken question.

„I know..." the guy sighs. „This is the fifth store I'm searching in... I always got judging looks, too," he paused, probably knowing that his answer wasn't enough to satisfy me.

„I originally bought a different console. The guy scammed me and sent me this old thing... He blocked me when I got the package," he explained, watching as I pull out a small, dusted box from the back of the drawer. „... That's why I didn't want to buy games online. Didn't want to get scammed second time," he finished, peeking into the opened box.

„Right... Well- here they are," I say, glancing at him before looking back to the box. „Anything peculiar...?" My voice trailed off into another question.

„Uh..." he hummed to himself thoughtfully. „Mario Kart, if you have it..." I nod to myself before searching through the grey cartridges...

And soon enough, I pull out what he asked for and hand him it. I could swear his eyes almost shined with happiness.

With a small smile, I hid back the box into the drawer and closed it. Then, I made my way to the counter again, with the guy following me.

„That's all?" I asked before I walked behind the counter again, ready to check him out. He nodded along, letting out a hum. „Do you want to rent it or buy it? We can sell old games like these," I add.

„Mhm- I'll buy it,"

„So..." I drag out, clicking something on the register. „43 dollars,"

„Ah, that expensive...?" The guy complained with a light tone, but took out his wallet from his jeans pocket and pulled out the exact amount.

„Yeah, sad, isn't it..." I say with a chuckle, taking the cash from him and putting it in the cash register.

„Mm," he hummed. „Thanks, have a good one," he said, putting his wallet back into his pocket as well as the cartridge.

„You too. If you need more games for that old thing, we have more," I say with a smile. Regular customer shit.

„Got it," he nodded, before making his way out the store.

My eyes followed the guy for another second, before I sank back to the chair. One customer today... What a record.

Once again, my co-worker, Alice, came up to the desk again. Her expression was almost guilty... if that's what you could call it.

„Y/N... Sorry- uh... I have to leave work early today. I called Mr. Brooklyn already," she said, leaning against the counter briefly. „You'll do fine alone, right?"

I looked at her for a moment, before nodding along. „Yeah, I'll be fine," I say with a small smile again, which made Alice smile as well.

„... I saw that guy from before," she said, changing the topic smoothly. „I know him from somewhere... Dunno where from," she added thoughtfully, her voice carrying that accent again.

Now that I think about it...

Yeah. I know him from somewhere as well.

I nodded to her quietly, humming an agreement.

„Anyways... I have to go," Alice said, pushing herself off the desk. She patted my shoulder before heading to the backroom.

„Right, bye," I answered, hearing a muffled „bye" from the backroom.

...

The rest of the day was quite calm... Two more customers came.

On the evening, I mopped the floor, dusted off some shelves... And just went home.

All that while keeping it on the back of my mind that I knew the first guy from somewhere.
