Introduction/Synopsis

The story begins with their father, Big John, disappearing at sea. This leaves his son;

John B. Routledge

And his younger sister;

Elena Taylor Routledge

Living on their own and constantly trying to avoid child protective services. They both had zero desire or taste to be in foster care or to be cycled through foster homes, where they never feel at home, unless it was in the Outer Banks. So, their mission was very clear.

To find their dad and bring him back so they no longer feel like a target by DCS, aka the Department of Child Services. Their search for their father is what really sets the plot in motion.

John B, who is the older brother, is meticulous, careful, always planning, staying cautious, and keeps the family together. His tendency to think things through is what really keeps the group in line.

And then there was the younger child.

Elena, going by Lena or E.T given her middle name, who is two years younger, may initially seem more reckless. But she is also smarter, more confident, and fiercely loyal to her friends and to her brother, John B. Her desire to quickly find answers about their father intensifies.

As they delve deeper into the mystery, they find themselves not only involved in a treasure hunt but also grappling with the class divides of the Outer Banks—specifically the wealthy Kooks versus the working-class Pogues. With her fiery spirit, Elena often has confrontations with the Kooks, perhaps even more than John B, as she defends her brother and their Pogue friends.

One of her main adversaries is Rafe Cameron, the leader of the Kooks and a true psychopath. As they battle the Kooks, decipher clues, outsmart other treasure hunters, and navigate the many dangers of the quest, they also strive to keep their little family unit intact.

This journey leads to significant uncertainty about their future.
