Eighty years had passed since India gained its independence, and nearly five decades since the royal kingdoms had lost their political authority.
The crowns no longer ruled the nation, yet their legacy remained untouched. Their influence, their honor, and the respect they commanded still lived on in the hearts of the people.
One such royal family was Kesar Mahal.
Its head, Data Hukum Maan Singh, had built its glory with years of relentless hard work and sacrifice. What was once merely a royal estate had transformed into one of the country's most powerful business empires under his leadership.
But destiny had other plans.
A tragic accident claimed the lives of Maan Singh and his wife, Padma.
Yet, as death drew near, Maan Singh realized it had never been an accident.
It was a conspiracy.
Knowing his time was running out, he entrusted his entire empire, Kesar Mahal, and most importantly, the responsibility of his only son, Kunwar Saran, to his younger sister, Rajeshwari Devi.
With trembling hands, he lifted the ceremonial sword, the sacred symbol of their lineage.
"Ye talwar humein humare rajtilak ke waqt mili thi," he whispered, his voice growing weaker. "Iske mayne jaanti hain aap? Ye sirf ek talwar nahi hai... ye humare purkhon ki virasat hai. Iska matlab hai ki iss mahal, iss rajgharane aur iski pratishtha ki raksha... poori nishtha se karni hoti hai."
He slowly placed the sword into Rajeshwari's hands.
"Aaj ye talwar hum aapko de rahe hain... kyunki humein poora vishwas hai ki aap is virasat ki raksha karengi... aur Kunwar Saran ko iss rajgaddi ke layak banayengi."
His breaths had become shallow.
Every word demanded the last of his strength.
Rajeshwari Devi broke down into uncontrollable sobs.
"Nahi, Bhai Sa... aap aise baatein mat kijiye."
A weak smile crossed Maan Singh's lips.
"Humare paas waqt bahut kam hai, Rajeshwari."
Holding the sword close to her chest, with trembling hands, she nodded as tears streamed down her face.
"Hum vachan dete hain, Bhai Sa," she cried. "Chahe kuch bhi ho jaaye... hum Kesar Mahal ya Kunwar Saran par koi aanch nahi aane denge. Unki raksha hum apni aakhri saans tak karenge. Aur iss rajgaddi par sirf aur sirf aapka hi vansh baithega."
Years later...
Rajeshwari Devi stood silently before the grand portrait of Data Hukum Maan Singh in the royal hall of Kesar Mahal.
The same ceremonial sword rested in her hands.
For a long moment, she gazed at her brother's portrait, as though reliving the promise she had made all those years ago.
Then, with profound reverence, she lifted the sword and touched its hilt to her forehead.
"I have not forgotten, Bhai Sa," she whispered.
Carefully placing the sword back in its rightful place beneath his portrait, Rajeshwari Devi turned around, her expression once again transforming into that of the formidable guardian of Kesar Mahal.
"Ma'am, the outfits for today's pooja are ready. We've shortlisted two designs. Which one would you like to wear?"
Neelam, Rajeshwari Devi's personal assistant, spoke respectfully as two maids stepped forward, each carrying a different ensemble.
Rajeshwari ran her fingers over both fabrics before choosing the traditional Bandhani poshak.
One of the maids hesitated.
"Ranisa Hukum... maafi chahungi, par..." she pointed towards the other outfit. "Yeh poshak desh ke finest designers ne specially aapke liye tayyar ki hai. Isse pehenkar aap aur bhi royal lagenge."
