Jan's POV
The morning had already been a nightmare before they even left the apartment.
Jan was used to waking up at five, brewing a cup of black coffee, and reviewing global security threat assessments in silence. Today, she had spent forty-five minutes trying to figure out how to put a small plastic butterfly clip into fine, straight hair without causing physical pain. She had burned two pieces of toast. She had also spent a full ten minutes negotiating the necessity of wearing a coat in ten-degree weather.
Now, standing inside the brightly painted corridors of Sunflower Kindergarten, Jan felt her stress levels peaking.
The hallway outside the Bumblebee Room resembled a minor war zone. Fifteen small children ran in random directions, screaming at the top of their lungs. The floors were sticky. The air smelled strongly of crackers, wet paint, and threatening tantrums.
Jan stood pressed against the wall near the doorframe to stay out of the traffic flow. Her mid-length blonde hair was tied back in a neat knot, contrasting with her tailored black wool suit, crisp white button-down shirt, and polished oxfords. In her left hand, held like a very fragile package, was a pink unicorn backpack.
The backpack belonged to five-year-old Jewel. Her niece was currently hiding behind Jan's right leg, gripping the crease of her dark trousers with two small fists.
Across the hallway, a mother holding a toddler stared at Jan with undisguised terror. Jan stared back, her dark eyes evaluating the woman as a potential obstacle. The mother quickly looked away and hurried her child into another classroom.
"Stay close to me, Jewel," Jan whispered, leaning down slightly.
"You look scary, Auntie Jan," Jewel mumbled into the fabric of the suit pants.
"I look prepared," Jan corrected quietly.
She had spent twelve years managing corporate security details and crisis logistics. She had defused hostile board meetings and escorted executives through unstable regions. Yet, nothing in her extensive briefing manuals had prepared her for morning drop-off.
The wooden door to the Bumblebee Room swung open.
A woman stepped out into the chaotic hallway. She wore bright yellow overalls over a white t-shirt. Long dark hair fell past her shoulders in loose waves coupled with soft bangs, framing a bright, expressive face dusted with a smudge of blue paint on her left cheek.
This was Jingjing Yu, the lead teacher of the Bumblebee Room.
Jingjing surveyed the hallway. Her gaze slid past a pair of twins arguing over a red crayon, past a boy wearing a pirate eyepatch, and finally landed on the suited woman standing rigidly by the door.
A warm, amused smile curved Jingjing's lips. She walked over, her steps light and bouncy, ignoring the tension radiating from Jan's shoulders.
"Good morning," Jingjing said. Her voice was melodic and soft, carrying easily over the noise of the running children. "You must be Jan. And you are Jewel, right? Welcome to the Bumblebee Room."
Jewel peeked out from behind Jan's leg, offering a shy wave. "Hi."
Jan did not relax her posture. She shifted the pink unicorn backpack to her other hand, keeping her grip tight on the strap.
"Good morning, Ms. Yu," Jan said, her voice flat and measured. "I have conducted a preliminary scan of the classroom from this angle. The fire exits seems clear, but the wooden toy bin near the reading corner represents a potential danger for children running at full speed."
Jingjing blinked. Her smile widened into a genuine grin. She looked from Jan's sharp jawline down to the pink unicorn backpack clutched in a death grip against the expensive suit. The contrast was so absurdly charming that Jingjing had to bite the inside of her cheek to keep her from laughing out loud.
"Thank you for the safety audit, Jan," Jingjing replied smoothly, crouching down to Jewel's eye level. "Jewel, sweetheart, why don't you go inside and check out the dinosaur table? Your friend Any is already building a volcano."
Jewel looked up at Jan for permission.
Jan gave a single nod. The little girl let go of the trousers and trotted happily into the bright classroom, her light-up sneakers flashing with every step.
Jan watched her niece cross the threshold, tracking her movement until Jewel was safely seated at a small wooden table next to a girl covered in glitter. Only then did Jan turn her attention back to the teacher.
Jingjing had risen back to her feet. She stood less than a meter away. Up close, Jan noticed the scent of lavender and fresh paper clinging to the teacher's clothes.
"You can relax your shoulders, you know," Jingjing said softly, tilting her head. "Nobody is going to ambush you in here. Well, except maybe for a flying juice box."
"Vigilance is necessary in environments with high foot traffic," Jan replied. "I am simply ensuring a secure transition for my niece."
"Of course," Jingjing chuckled, her dark eyes crinkling at the corners in a way that drew Jan's focus. "Though, if I might offer a small piece of advice from one professional to another, holding a sparkly unicorn backpack like a briefcase tends to scare the other parents."
Jan looked down at the bag in her hand without losing her grip.
"It contains spare clothes, a water bottle, and a peanut-free snack," Jan said defensively. "The zipper mechanism is fragile and requires proper handling."
"Let me help you with that," Jingjing offered, reaching out to take the backpack straps so Jewel could have it on her hook inside.
Their fingers brushed.
It was a trivial touch. Just the back of Jingjing's warm knuckles grazing against Jan's cold skin as they both held the strap of the pink bag.
Jan forgot how to breathe.
A sudden rush of heat traveled up her arm, settling in the center of her chest. Her heart skipped a beat, a physical reaction so startling that Jan lost her train of thought. Her dark eyes widened, locking onto Jingjing's face.
Jingjing froze as well. The playful smile on her face faltered for a second, replaced by a soft intake of breath. The warmth of Jan's skin lingered against her hand, sending a strange flutter down her spine. Jingjing looked up, meeting Jan's intense stare. For a fleeting moment, the noisy kindergarten hallway faded into silence.
Jan quickly pulled her hand back, taking a subtle step away to put space between them. Her face remained a mask of cool indifference but inside, her pulse was racing. She shoved her hands into the pockets of her trousers to hide the slight tremor in her fingers.
"Thank you," Jan said, her voice dropping lower than she intended.
Jingjing blinked, slowly recovering her composure. She took the backpack and held it against her chest, a faint pink flush rising on her cheeks. She cleared her throat gently.
"You are very welcome, Jan," Jingjing said, her voice quiet. "Drop-off ends at three in the afternoon. I will see you then."
"Absolutely," Jan replied.
She turned on her heel and walked down the hallway without looking back. She moved with purpose, dodging running toddlers and exhausted parents, desperate to get back to the quiet sanctuary of her car.
Jingjing stood by the classroom door, watching the tall, suited figure disappear around the corner. She touched her fingers where they had brushed against Jan's, a slow, fascinated smile spreading across her face.
Morning drop-off was never going to be boring again.
