The first bell of the school year rang loud and clear across the whole campus of San Lorenzo High, waking up every corner that had been quiet for the whole summer break. Sunlight spilled through the wide windows of Room 302, falling on rows of polished wooden desks and the freshly painted green chalkboard at the front. Students filed in one by one, carrying new notebooks, stuffed bags, and excited stories about where they went or what they did during the vacation. Everyone was talking and laughing, happy to see old friends again after so many weeks apart.

Sunghoon Dela Cruz stepped inside the classroom quietly, his steps light and steady like he always carried himself. He wore his uniform perfectly pressed, his hair neat, and his face calm with no sign of too much excitement or worry. He walked straight to his usual seat near the window at the back, placing his things down one by one in an organized way. To everyone watching, he looked unbothered by anything around him, as if the noise and energy of the first day never really reached him. But if anyone looked close enough, they would have seen his eyes scanning the room quickly, searching for one familiar face he had been thinking about all summer.

Just as the second bell was about to ring, the door swung open wide and Sunoo Reyes walked in with a bright, big smile that seemed to light up the whole room all at once. His uniform was just a little bit loose at the sleeves, and his backpack was slung over one shoulder like it weighed nothing at all. He waved hello to almost everyone he passed, stopping for quick hugs or funny greetings from his friends along the way. Ni-ki walked right behind him, already teasing him about being almost late and about the grades they would all be fighting for before the school year even ended.

The moment Sunoo’s eyes landed on Sunghoon, his smile faltered just for a second before turning into something sharp and competitive. Sunghoon looked away fast, staring out the window so no one would catch the way his heart suddenly beat a little faster against his chest. Sunoo made his way straight to the seat right in front of Sunghoon, dropping his bag with a soft thud that made Sunghoon lift an eyebrow at him. The air between the two of them seemed to shift instantly, turning thick with that old familiar mix of challenge and something neither of them dared to name out loud.

“Looks like someone claimed the best spot again,” Sunoo said, turning halfway in his chair to look up at Sunghoon, his tone playful but carrying a clear challenge underneath. “But don’t get too comfortable. This year won’t be as easy for you as the last one was.” Sunghoon turned back to face him slowly, his expression cool and guarded like he always made sure to be whenever Sunoo was near. He rested his elbow on the armrest and tilted his head just a little, looking down at Sunoo with that calm, confident look most people found intimidating.

“Who said it was ever easy for you to catch up in the first place?” Sunghoon answered back, his voice steady and even, though his fingers tightened just slightly around the edge of his notebook. “You talk big, Reyes. Let’s see if you can keep up with all those words once the real lessons start.” A few classmates sitting nearby turned to look at them already, some smiling and some already preparing themselves for the usual back and forth that happened between these two every single year. Everyone knew this was how things always went between Sunghoon and Sunoo, and most found it just part of how their class worked.

Before Sunoo could fire back another reply, their class adviser Mr. Alcantara walked in carrying a stack of papers and a small book in his hands. The whole room fell quiet at once, everyone sitting straight and turning their attention towards the front of the room. Mr. Alcantara placed his things down on the teacher’s table and looked around at all of them with a warm, welcoming smile on his face. He greeted everyone a good morning and welcomed them all to another school year, reminding them that this would be full of new lessons, activities, and challenges for every single one of them.
