Julie Mills had never been a person of faith.
To Julie, the universe was fundamentally devoid of poetry, operating instead through cold mechanics, unyielding physics, and a profound, chaotic indifference. She didn't believe in miracles, destiny, karmic retribution, or some grand, benevolent plan written by an invisible higher power. If she couldn't see something with her own two eyes, touch it with her fingertips, or prove it with empirical, hard-edged logic, it simply wasn't real. Faith was an illusion for the naive—a comforting fairy tale told to children to help them sleep through the dark.
