Meet Narissa

Gideon's hand rested around Narissa's throat exactly where she had asked him to place it. His palm lay warm against the side of her neck, his fingers firm enough to remind her of the strength inside them without threatening the fragile structures beneath. His thumb remained tucked safely beneath her jaw, well away from the vulnerable center of her throat, and every few seconds his gaze searched her face for some minute change he might have missed. He was careful, attentive, and trying so earnestly that Narissa hated herself a little for wishing he would stop looking worried.

"Tell me what you need," he said, lowering his voice into something meant to resemble a command. Warmth still softened it around the edges. Even with her wrists secured above her head and his body holding her against the mattress, he sounded as though he were inviting her to guide him rather than expecting her to obey.

Narissa closed her eyes. In the privacy of her imagination, those words had never required an answer. They had landed with enough certainty to silence the restless part of her mind that examined every possibility, anticipated every consequence, and adjusted itself around the comfort of everyone else in the room. Here, beneath Gideon's careful hand, the question merely gave that responsibility back to her. "Don't ask me," she whispered, and heard the strain in her own voice.

His grip loosened immediately. "Are you all right?" The attempted authority vanished so completely that Narissa could almost feel it leave the bed.

"Yes," she answered too quickly.

Gideon's eyes narrowed with concern. His hand did not return to its former pressure. "Do you want to stop?"

"No." Frustration sharpened the word more than she intended, though whether it was directed at him or herself, she could not have said.

"Then help me understand." He spoke gently, almost apologetically, and that was worse than if he had become angry. He was asking her to rescue him from making the wrong decision when the entire point was that she did not want to decide.

Narissa opened her eyes and found him watching her with the same steady concern he brought to injuries, arguments, and difficult conversations. He had spent months learning because she had finally admitted that she wanted something beyond the easy intimacy they already shared. He had read books written by dominants, submissives, physicians, and specialists in interdesignation relationships, then returned to her with careful questions that embarrassed them both. He knew how to restrain her without damaging her shoulders, where he could safely place his hands, how fear altered her scent differently from anticipation, and which signals meant discomfort rather than distress. He had learned every mechanism she could explain, yet he still waited for her to tell him what came next.

Narissa pulled gently against the restraints. The leather creaked above her head, and Gideon's attention snapped toward her wrists before the sound had fully faded. "Too tight?" he asked, already reaching to check the space beneath one cuff.

"No." She watched his fingers test the fit they had checked twice before fastening. Two fingers of space beneath the leather, no pressure against the joint, no strain through her shoulders. Everything was exactly as they had agreed, and nothing felt right. "I don't want to decide."

Gideon went still. Confusion gathered slowly between his brows as he tried to reconcile her words with every conversation that had brought them here. "You asked for this," he said at last, his tone careful rather than accusing.

"I know." Shame tightened behind Narissa's ribs.

"I thought we agreed on what we were doing." His voice remained calm, but bewilderment made it quieter. He was not challenging her right to change her mind. He genuinely did not understand what agreement remained missing.
