Jennie
The last exam of the spring semester ended on a Thursday afternoon in late May, and the moment I walked out of the lecture hall the air already felt different.
Warmer. Lighter.
Like the whole city had finally exhaled after months of cold rain and fluorescent lights. I was twenty, a second-year student, and for the first time since September I had nothing scheduled.
No readings. No deadlines. No group projects that somehow always fell apart the night before.
Just summer stretching out in front of me like a blank page.
I lived in a small one-bedroom apartment on the third floor of an old brick building near campus. It was cheap, a little drafty in winter, but in summer the windows caught the afternoon sun perfectly. The place smelled faintly of the lavender detergent I always used and the vanilla candles I burned too often. My bed was a soft mess of white sheets and a single oversized hoodie I stole from an ex two years ago and never gave back. The kitchen was tiny, just enough counter space for a coffee maker and a toaster, but I liked it that way.
Less to clean. More time to do nothing.
That first Friday morning of freedom I woke up late, the kind of late that only happens when you have nowhere to be. Sunlight spilled across the sheets and onto my bare legs.
I stretched, arms over my head, back arching, and felt the familiar pull of my own body. I was five-three, soft in all the places that mattered, and I'd never been the type to pretend otherwise. My breasts were heavy, full enough that even a simple tank top needed a good bra if I didn't want to bounce with every step. My ass was round and thick, the kind that filled out shorts and made the waistband dig in a little when I sat. Black hair fell straight past my shoulders, usually a little messy from sleep.
People always commented on my eyes, tilted, sharp, almost cat-like and the way my smile showed a bit of gum when I laughed too hard. I used to hate that smile when I was younger. Now I didn't mind it so much. It was mine.
I stayed in bed longer than I needed to, phone in hand, scrolling through nothing important.
The group chat with my friends from uni was already full of plans. Someone wanted to go to the beach the next weekend. Someone else was talking about a party at a house outside the city. I typed a few half-hearted replies and then locked the screen.
The idea of being around people felt exhausting already. I'd spent the entire year performing, smiling in lectures, nodding in seminars, pretending to care about group dynamics.
Summer was supposed to be mine.
Breakfast was coffee and toast with too much butter. I ate it standing at the counter in just an oversized T-shirt that barely covered the tops of my thighs. The fabric was thin enough that the outline of my nipples showed if the air conditioning kicked on.
I didn't bother fixing it. No one was here to see. That was the best part of living alone. No roommate walking in. No parents asking why I was still in my pajamas at noon. Just me and the quiet.
The first week of summer drifted by in a soft, aimless haze. I cleaned the apartment thoroughly on Monday, wiped down every surface, reorganized the bookshelf, washed the sheets twice just because I could.
On Tuesday I went for a long walk through the park near the river, headphones in, music low enough that I could still hear the water. People jogged past. Couples sat on benches. A group of girls my age laughed too loudly near the ice-cream stand. I kept walking, feeling the sun on my shoulders and the way my shorts rode up the backs of my thighs with every step. I was aware of my body in a way I usually wasn't during the semester. Without the constant rush of classes and deadlines, every sensation felt sharper. The way my breasts moved when I walked. The soft jiggle of my ass. The faint sweat that gathered between my thighs when the heat climbed past twenty-five degrees.
