The Daily Grind (And a Side of Sass)

The bells above the door of "The Daily Grind" don't just jingle when Penelope Garcia walks in. They seem to announce a parade.

Hayden Williams doesn't even have to look up from the portafilter she is cleaning to know who it is. The scent of vanilla-strawberry perfume and the distinct clack-clack-clack of five-inch neon heels are more reliable than any GPS.

-"If you're here to tell me you found another vintage hacker-core t-shirt on eBay, my bank account is already crying." - Hayden calls out, her voice dry but laced with a suppressed grin.

-"First of all, rude. Second of all, it was a limited edition '94 DEF CON hoodie and it was a steal." - Penelope huffs, leaning over the counter. She is a whirlwind of color, today in a bright teal dress with a massive sunflower pinned to her hair. -"And third, I am here for my liquid sanity. Make it a double, Hayd. It's been a 'Reid is explaining physics at 8:00 AM' kind of morning."

Hayden finally looks up, pushing a strand of dark hair behind her ear. She looks every bit the unassuming barista in her charcoal apron, but there is a sharpness in her eyes that doesn't quite match the "customer service" smile.

-"Coming right up, P. One 'Super-Sized Sanity' with extra foam."

As the espresso machine hisses, the two fall into the easy rhythm of a friendship forged in the digital trenches. Most people assume they met through a shared love of bright colors or local coffee, but the reality is much nerdier. They had met five years ago in an encrypted chat room for "grey hat" enthusiasts, Hayden, the lightning-fast transcriber who could log data faster than most programs, and Penelope, the goddess of the search engine.

-"So..." - Penelope says, lowering her voice and leaning in closer, her glittery glasses sliding down her nose. -"How's the 'incognito' life treating you? No weird vibes? No ghosts from the courtroom past?"

Hayden's hands falter for a fraction of a second, a tiny hitch that only someone like Penelope would notice, before she finishes the pour.

-"Peaceful. Boring. Exactly how I like it. I spend my days arguing about almond milk versus oat milk instead of documenting the testimony of cartel mid-levelers. It's a dream, Pen."

-"You're a terrible liar to me, you know." - Penelope whispers, her expression softening from playful to protective. -"I still don't like that you're out here in the open. You could come work in my lair. I have extra monitors. I have snacks."

-"And you have FBI agents everywhere." - Hayden counters, sliding the cup across the counter. -"I'm fine. I'm a ghost, remember? To the world, I'm just Hayden the Barista who makes a mean latte and has a slightly too-sarcastic mouth."

Penelope takes a sip, sighing in relief.

-"A very sarcastic mouth. Which, speaking of... My boss should be in within the hour. Be nice to him today? He's had a week."

Hayden leans her elbows on the counter, a mischievous glint appearing in her eyes.

-"You mean Aaron 'The Suit' Hotchner? I'm always nice, Penelope. I just think he needs to be reminded that the world won't end if he adds a little sugar to his life."

-"You're going to poke the bear once too often." - Penelope warns, though she is giggling.

-"Maybe." - Hayden shrugs, wiping down the counter with a smirk. -"But he's a very interesting bear to poke."
