Chapter One: Into the Alaskan Wilderness

The sound of the helicopter faded into the distance until it became nothing more than a memory.

Ethan stood alone on the edge of a gravel clearing, watching the aircraft disappear beyond the mountains. Within minutes, the last connection to civilization was gone.

No roads.
No cell service.
No nearby towns.
No one coming unless he called for them.

Only Alaska.

The wilderness stretched endlessly in every direction. Towering mountains covered in snow cut into the gray sky. Dense forests filled the valleys below, untouched for miles. Rivers carved their way through the landscape, carrying ice-cold water from glaciers deep in the mountains.

It was beautiful.

It was also dangerous.

Ethan adjusted the straps of his jacket and looked back at the vehicle that had brought him here.

His 2026 GMC Sierra 3500HD Denali Ultimate dually sat behind him, covered in dust from the journey in. The truck looked almost out of place against the untouched wilderness, but every part of it had a purpose.

The lifted suspension, heavy-duty tires, armor, recovery gear, and expedition equipment had transformed it from a pickup truck into a mobile survival base.

Ethan ran his hand along the side of the truck.

"Alright," he said quietly. "Let's see what you can do."

He opened the rear storage compartment and began unloading his first-day equipment.

Everything had a place.

Medical supplies in one drawer.
Tools in another.
Food sealed and organized.
Navigation equipment ready.

Years in special operations had taught him one thing:

Preparation prevents problems.

But Alaska had a way of humbling even the most prepared people.

Ethan pulled out his map and studied the area.

His plan was simple.

For the first week, he would establish a temporary base camp near a freshwater source, scout the surrounding area, and learn the land.

The truck would remain his central base.

From there, he would:

* Explore nearby valleys
* Find reliable food sources
* Identify safe routes
* Study weather patterns
* Test his limits

The goal wasn't speed.

The goal was survival.

As the sun began dropping behind the mountains, Ethan started setting up camp.

The rooftop tent unfolded smoothly above the truck bed. The awning extended out, creating a sheltered workspace beside the vehicle.

Within an hour, his camp was ready.

A small kitchen area.

A repair station.

A communications setup.

A sleeping area above the ground, protected from the cold and wildlife.

It wasn't comfortable by normal standards.

But for Ethan, it was home.

That evening, he sat beneath the awning with a cup of coffee, staring into the forest.

The wind moved through the trees.

Somewhere in the distance, an animal called out.

The wilderness was alive.

Ethan checked his satellite communicator and recorded his first entry.

Day 1: Alaska Expedition
Location secured. Vehicle operational. Camp established. Weather stable.

He paused before adding one more line.

"The wilderness feels different when you're alone."

He closed the device.

For years, Ethan had trained for survival.

Now he would find out if the training was enough.

Later that night, temperatures dropped quickly.

The wind picked up.

The mountains disappeared into darkness.

Inside the tent, Ethan lay awake listening to the sounds outside.

The creaking trees.

The distant movement of wildlife.

The endless Alaskan night.

Most people would have felt fear.

Ethan felt something else.

A challenge.

Because tomorrow, the real expedition would begin.
