Prologue
The needle moved with unhurried precision.
Through cloth.
Through flesh.
Through silence that had long since stopped asking permission.
Vasilia Selene Ashenford did not rush.
Moonlight lay thin across her hands, pale as spilled silver, catching briefly on the curve of the needle before fading into the dark fold of the cabin. The fire had burned low, leaving only embers that breathed rather than burned, as though even warmth here had learned restraint.
Blood marked the linen beneath her fingers, dark and honest.
Her expression did not change... Composed, exact. As though injury were nothing more than an error in an otherwise perfect account.
"...Inconvenient." The word left her quietly. Not for the wound but for everything it implied, questions, rumours and the slow, suffocating patience of expectation. In questions that would follow daylight.
A noble lady was not meant to be found alone in a forest hunting lodge at night, stitching herself together in silence. That kind of image belonged to soldiers who survived by necessity, not daughters of noble houses who survived by expectation. Surely no noble lady was meant to return to silence with steel hidden beneath her life and blood hidden beneath her sleeve.
She tightened the thread.
The irony was almost unremarkable... Almost.
Across the room, a man stood where the threshold gave way to shadow, he did not move and he did not even bother to announce himself, only observed.
Dark sapphire hair fell in quiet disorder, darkened by night's absence of mercy, framing features carved with an unnerving stillness. Crimson eyes held her without wavering, neither softened by curiosity nor sharpened by hostility, but fixed with the calm attention of someone who had already measured every possible outcome of her existence in that room.
Tall, broad-shouldered. A frame built not for courtly halls, but for distance travelled and battles survived. Even at rest, there was nothing idle in him. Every line of his posture suggested control held just beneath the surface, like steel sheathed rather than lowered.
He looked at her wound first, the linen, then her hands and only after that, her face.
"...You're injured." He said it with a calm unwavering tone, it was not a question but rather a conclusion.
Vasilia did not look up as she tied the thread off before sending her reply, "I am aware."
Silence followed, not empty silence but a weighted and measured one.
"I wasn't expecting company." she said at last.
"That makes two of us" he replied. At that, his gaze shifted again, briefly tracing the wound's edges before returning to her with the same unbroken calm, "You're doing it wrong."
The thread tightened between her fingers "I am doing it myself." A trace of annoyance slipped into her otherwise tranquil voice
His crimson eyes settled on her, "That is not what I'm saying."
A pause lingered.
"...Are you offering correction, or observation?" She asked, her composed tone finally touched by irritation.
Only then did the needle still completely and Vasilia lifted her gaze, properly this time. The man did not look away.
"...Who are you?" She asked again, her voice calm, though her guard remained firmly in place.
