"You're covered in snow, Mimi. Go change before it melts and messes with your circuits!" Z3R0 gently pushed the smaller Worker Drone in the direction of her bedroom. Courage eyed her worriedly, nodding his head once in agreement.
Well, if they were agreeing on something, then the little Drone couldn't disappoint them now, could she? Not again. Not after they had worried all night about her whereabouts because she had snuck out to gaze at the stars for the third time that month.
Guilt gnawed at her as she reluctantly agreed, "Aww, fine... But we're having hot cocoa after!" At the terrified expression of Z3R0 and the shocked and mildly infuriated expression of Courage, she quickly added, "Kidding, kidding! We would die."
With that, she turned on her heel and booked it back to her room.
Once inside, she closed the door and brushed off some of the snow, which was already beginning to melt. She let out a hiss as some of the liquid dripped between the joints on her hand. Sure, she could handle a little bit, but she hated when the cold seeped in.
Shaking out her hand, she wandered over to her closet and yanked open the door. She riffled through her many sweaters (because why have different clothes when you could wear the exact same thing every day?) before finally choosing one. It shouldn't have taken any amount of time, really, since they were all the same, but whatever.
As she pulled it out, something fell from someplace behind it and landed on the floor with a soft thump. Curious, she took a step back and looked around for the object.
She didn't see it at first, but after moving some of her clothes around and squinting, she finally spotted something soft and sandy brown.
Oh.
Oh.
She stared at it for a long moment, memories beginning to come back to her. They normally haunted her at night - it was part of the reason she liked to move around or go outside instead of sleeping. But this object, filled with so much of her past...
People were rushing past her, pushing her to and fro. She slammed into a wall, confused and trying to figure out why her Momma hadn't come inside yet. She seemed so determined to get them inside, so why wasn't she here?
Mio's vision began to blur.
"You little devil!" A pot flew just past her head, but she was too scared to move. Her Ma was angry again, and it was her fault. She should have never asked about Momma. The little Drone shook, but her feet were planted firmly in place. Ma screamed something again, but Mio couldn't hear what was said as another object - a plate this time - crashed into her head.
She whimpered, remembering all the cuts on her face and hands after being screamed at to clean it up.
It was dark. It was quiet, too. Ma wasn't in her room - the door was open. But where could she be? After a while of looking high and low for her mother, Mio finally found a note on the refrigerator door. Her heart sank as she read it, but she couldn't say she was surprised. Ma was bound to leave her at some point. Everyone did, eventually.
Mio could hear a scream. Not of terror, no. It sounded angry, and hurt, and sad. Most of all, it sounded broken.
That's not nice, Mio. People don't sound broken. You sound broken. I sound broken. But not others. Never others.
They're just... Distressed.
Mio was breathing heavily, and she felt dizzy. Her body felt cold, but something hot pricked her eyes - tears, Mio - and blurred even more of her vision. She could barely make out the sound of footfalls, running somewhere near her.
