Chapter one: Jessie powels

Warning: swearing, violence,

Introduction: A model from the show 'Chase Your Heart' has been murdered. The murderer is still on the loose, and who knows who's next.

Pit-pat, pit-pat, pit-pat.

The rain runs down in heavy droplets, making the concrete harder to run on as water stains my pants. The footsteps of the figure behind me are heavy. I duck into an alleyway and grab a knife that is still in my pocket. My breathing fogs from the cold air, and my heart thumps against my ribs. I run my hand over my hair as some wet strands stick to my face. I don't hear them anymore... maybe I'm safe... maybe they're gone. I turn around to take a peek over the wall, but before I know it—bang!

My eyes roll back, and blood trickles down my brow and nose. I wobble and try to grab the wall to stabilize myself, but... bang, bang! I fall to the ground with a thud, and everything goes dark.

I"We are here in an alleyway in London tonight. A woman of forty-five has been murdered. She has been shot in the head, stomach, and heart... We all know Jessie has run into many controversies and has made many enemies over the last few decades." am here now with crime investigator Luka McLeavage. Tell me, what did you find out during your investigation?"

"Well, the woman's name is Jessie Powels. She is a star in the modeling industry, and—"

"Mama!! Tell Marisol to turn down the damn TV!!"

"Oh, shut up, Matheo! Another woman was killed tonight!"

"I could care less! Just turn the volume down, or I will tell Mama you're dating someone!"

"Cerdo impaciente! It's that model from that stupid show you watch, you damn imbecile."

My eyes widen. I nearly drop the remote as my brother comes running downstairs and says, "No way, you're kidding?! Don't tell me it's Valentina, she has the voice of an angel!"

I groan, pause the news, and say in a much dryer voice, "No, it's that girl Jessie or something. Apparently, she has been shot three times."

"Wait, Powell was shot?!"

Matheo runs from the stairs, practically jumps over the couch, and lands beside me. He unpauses the TV as the news reporter continues talking.

"We all know Jessie has run into many controversies and has made many enemies over the last few decades. Last night, she was heard arguing with her manager, who is now our primary suspect."

I grab my bowl of cereal from the table, which is a little soggy now with just a few small crunchy bits left, and start eating slowly.

"Man, that's brutal. Hey, do you know when Papa is going to be back from his work trip, Matheo?... Matheeo?"

Matheo swats his hand at me, nearly making me drop my cereal. That ese pinche castroso.

"Marisol, shut up, this is important! The manager couldn't have killed Jessie. It was definitely Rosita. She has always been envious and jealous of her!"

I sigh and roll my eyes. "You're so obsessed with that show, but it's not that special. Besides, who cares who killed her? The cops have a suspect, let it go."

"I can't just let it go! I just know it's not the person they think it is. If you ever watched the show, you would know what I mean, you uncultured swine!"

I roll my eyes, stand up, and stuff my feet into my soft slippers. I walk to the kitchen to wash my own dish. "You know, not everything needs to be a mystery, right?"

"You don't get it Marisol it's just this feeling in my gut I just know it!"

I turn off the faucet, turn around to face him, and put a hand on my hip. The flower pots on the kitchen counter create a peaceful atmosphere, along with the photo displays.

"They said the police are looking into it. You're just fifteen, you're not a professional. Stop whining about it for once and start helping with the household."

Matheo flips me off. He is so lucky Mama and Papa are home right now. He says, "Wow, and you're nineteen and still have the brains of an infant."

My eye twitches, but I ignore him. I turn back around and take a big, exhausted exhale, my lips parting a little. I really gotta pack my bags now, though. School starts in over an hour, and I really want to see Mikhail's face again. I want to hold his hand and kiss his neck. I bite my lip and smile a bit. Everything is perfect today. Mi hermanito is going to sleep over at Tia's house. My parents are going to be gone for the night because they are going on a small business trip for the weekend.

Today is a big day, and I can't wait. I've prepared everything, and now I just have to wait until the time is right too strike.

I quickly open the lower cabinet, grab a lunch box, and start prepping my lunch and dinner for school—well, more like for after-school class activities. I make a small spin, grab some leftover sushi from yesterday that was still in the fridge, and put it in a small box with some packaged soy sauce. My back arches as I grab some bread from the corner of the counter and slap it on a plate. I stand straight again, lifting my leg like a ballerina while I grab some peanut butter, jelly, and a knife. Voila, a masterpiece! Now I just gotta slice it into four halves, place it into my bag, and I'm done gathering my things. I already prepacked my gym clothes and water bottle; now I just need lunch.

I truly wonder, though, how our time together will go. He has been nervous this whole month... Maybe he just wants to take things slow. And even if that's so, it's alright. I won't mind just having him cuddled up against me anyway.

I walk upstairs and grab my school uniform: a white, short-sleeved, buttoned-down shirt with a muted violet blazer and a light, flared A-line skirt that reaches my knees, featuring a white line at the bottom. I roll my socks up in a certain way that styles great with my black leather Mary Janes, and I'm done. Still ten hours left. Wait a minute... I quickly rummage through my drawer, pull out a dark grey tie, and tie it into a Windsor knot around my neck. Alright, now I'm done.

I walk downstairs smoothly, grab my bag, and shout from the door, "Bye Mama! Bye Papa! See ya later, piglet!"

I open the door and softly slam it shut behind me. I immediately start walking towards the bus stop. You know, this semester is going to be great. Nothing is going to happen.
