I stared out of my small bedroom window, watching the sun rise above the streets of Brookhaven. The town was just waking up, grass still wet from morning dew.
"Yuu! Down to the kitchen, please!"
My mother's voice ran through the house and up the narrow staircase, breaking my quiet moment of peace.
I sighed, smoothing down my linen dress before heading down. The kitchen was warm, filled with the comforting scent of dried herbs and baking bread. My mother stood by the stove, wiping her hands on a towel.
"Sam is down with the Summer Flu," she said, "The poor old merchant can't harvest this week. I need you to walk out to the forest and collect a basket of berries."
A groan left me, shoulders slumping, "The woods? Mother, that'll take hours! My feet are gonna be blistered before I even make it to the fields, can't someone else go?"
Instead of scolding me like I had thought she would, she just smiled,"Oh, it's so terrible, I know. Walking with pretty birds and breathing fresh air. Very tragic."
"It is tragic," I muttered, crossing my arms.
She laughed softly and pulled a piece of paper from her apron pocket. She pressed it into my hands with a dramatic wink, "To ensure you don't get lost and turn a three-hour trip into a four-hour tragedy, here's a map, at least try to enjoy the sunshine."
Unrolling the map, I looked at the dotted ink lines that showed where I needed to go.
I followed them, holding the map in an awkward position as I tried to make a way around the town plaza - it was clear my mother wasn't the best at drawing.
Finally, I made it to the forest entrance, though the gloomy sight took away any sunshine, and the rotting leaves didn't make it any better.
A shiver went down my spine, as I pulled my cloak tightly around my shoulders.
It now made sense to me why the townsfolk paid Mr. Sam so much money for his goods, no one ever dared to cross this tree line. Looking around, the forest felt eerie, a twig snapping in the distance.
I shook my head, gripping the map and taking a deep breath, forcing my boots forward.
The silence was broken as I spotted a small creature ahead. Perched on a low, mossy branch was a tiny black bat.
My fear quickly turned into curiosity.
The little creature was actually cute, with large eyes and fuzzy ears. It tilted its head from side to side, scanning me with up and down. I smiled and leaned in slightly.
Suddenly, the bat dove.
It swooped directly at my face, making me yell, throwing my hands up as the bat snatched the rolled paper right from my fingers.
"Hey, drop that!" I cried, lunging forward to grab it.
The bat evaded my grasp, flapping upwards out of reach. It settled onto a much higher tree branch, safely out of my reach.
Then, with a loud poof and a cloud of purple smoke, the bat vanished. In its place sat a very short man, his legs dangling over the branch. He wore a dark green vest and had a mischievous grin, casually tapping the map against his chin.
"Looking for this?" he chuckled.
"Hey!" I groaned, still trying to get my map back even though he's far too high up.
