36. Living in the Fast Lane

Wang Ping shouts, "You leave balcony. Not safe."

Li Min, his wife, ignores him. She is stubborn. She wants to water her pot plants.

Wang Ping is stubborn, too. That is why they live in a house in the middle of a half-built highway. He will not leave despite the lack of running water, electricity and the trucks and bulldozers that frequently (deliberately?) clip the four-storey house.

The house shakes. Another hit. The pot plants fall as the balcony gives way. They land on the highway, along with Li Min.

Wang Ping again shouts, "You come in. Balcony not safe."

Author's Note: in China, a "nail house" is a home whose resident refuses to leave in order to make way for new construction. Builders have to elaborately construct around it, often leaving behind an eyesore so awesome that it's almost a sculpture.

Do a google search for nail house; you'll be amazed!
