Evan: I became fascinated with poetry at around 15 years old. My English teacher introduced the class to various forms of poetry, and I found that words expressed through rhythm and rhyme (as opposed to free verse) resonated with me. I was particularly fascinated by the strict structure of Shakespearean sonnets. That was the first time I realised that fixed-form poetry wasn't just about making words rhyme, but that there was also an art in ensuring the syllables fell in the correct stress pattern.

Evan: My first full-length narrative poem was inspired by A Midsummer Night's Dream, which we studied as part of our English literature curriculum. Shakespeare cleverly used a mixture of rhythm, rhyme and prose to highlight different moods and characters, which wasn't a concept I'd been exposed to before. Fascinated by the idea of telling a story in rhythm and rhyme, I ended up re-writing the story of Rumpelstiltskin in this style. Then, inspired by Shakespeare's sonnets, I also submitted an anonymous love poem to a school competition, and although I won first prize, I never claimed the accolade because I didn't want to admit that I'd written it.
