The Life We Chose

Dr. Kim Taehyung was always good with children.

It was the first thing people noticed about him, even before they knew about his credentials.

He bent his knees when he spoke to them. He softened his voice without thinking.

He listened longer than most adults bothered to.

In a hospital where time was always running out, Taehyung somehow made space stretch.

"Good morning, champ," he said gently, crouching beside a boy clutching a stuffed dinosaur. "I heard you've been very brave."

The boy didn't answer immediately, just stared at him with wide, uncertain eyes.

Taehyung waited without pressure and rush.

Eventually, the boy nodded.

"Good," Taehyung smiled. "Because I need brave patients like you today."

Around them, the pediatric oncology ward was already awake, machines beeping softly, nurses moving between rooms, parents sitting in chairs that had clearly been slept on too many nights.

It was a place full of endings.

But Taehyung always treated it like a place that still had possibilities.

That was why they trusted him.

Not just as a doctor.

But as someone who could sit in the middle of fear and not let it swallow a child whole.

Later that afternoon, he signed discharge papers for a girl who had just finished another round of treatment.

Her mother cried quietly beside her bed.

The girl, thin but smiling, held onto Taehyung's white coat.

"Doctor Tae," she said softly, "will I come back again?"

Taehyung paused for a fraction of a second. Then he smiled the way he always did.

"The hospital will always be here," he said carefully. "But I think we're going to try very hard to keep you away from it for a while."

The girl nodded like she understood everything.

Children always believed him. Adults often did too.

That was the dangerous part.

By evening, the hospital began to empty in the way it always did: slowly, reluctantly, as if even the building was tired of letting people go.

Taehyung returned to his office.

There were certificates on the wall, awards lined up on a shelf, and a nameplate on his desk that read:

Dr. Kim Taehyung, Pediatric Oncology

Everything he had once dreamed of was already here.

Yet when he closed the door behind him, the silence felt too complete.

He loosened his tie, exhaled slowly, and sat down.

On his desk was a stack of files waiting for tomorrow. He opened one file. Then another. He scrolled through names, ages and diagnosis, Lives reduced to paper, waiting to be fought for, waiting to be saved.

Taehyung worked through them quietly, methodically.

Because that was what he was good at. Because that was what he chose.

His phone buzzed once, the dinner appointment he had has been cancelled.

He stared at it for a moment, then set the phone face down without replying.

It wasn't unusual, he was used to plans getting cancelled often.

He stood up briefly, walked to the small window in his office.

Outside, the city was already glowing, cars moving like veins, lights blinking like distant promises.

Somewhere out there, people were going home.

To conversations. To laughter.
To someone waiting.

Just like how he used to come home to someone before.

But for the time being, Taehyung stayed where he was.
