Jessica Evans stood in front of the school gates, staring at the building like it had personally decided to ruin her life.
It was bigger than she imagined. Louder too. Everywhere she looked, groups of students laughed, hugged, shouted—like they already belonged here. Like they had always belonged.
She didn’t.
Jessica adjusted the strap of her bag and stepped forward anyway.
“New school, new start,” her mom had said this morning with a hopeful smile.
Jessica didn’t answer. She had stopped believing in “new starts” a long time ago.
The hallways were already packed when she entered.
Lockers slammed. Shoes squeaked. Voices overlapped in a messy rhythm she couldn’t understand. Jessica kept her eyes down, walking straight like she had a destination even though she didn’t fully know where she was going.
That’s when she heard it.
Whispers.
“Is that Davien Woods?”
“He’s here already?”
Jessica slowed down slightly at the name. Something in the way they said it made it sound important… or dangerous.
She looked up without meaning to.
And she saw him.
Davien Woods.
He was leaning against the lockers like he owned the entire corridor. One hand in his pocket, the other holding his phone loosely. Calm. Unbothered. Like nothing in this school could surprise him.
But what caught her attention wasn’t just him.
It was the way people looked at him.
Some admired him.
Some feared him.
Most just watched like he was a mistake they couldn’t avoid.
Jessica frowned slightly and looked away.
“Typical popular guy,” she muttered under her breath. “Probably thinks the world revolves around him.”
She continued walking.
“Move.”
The voice came out of nowhere.
Jessica stopped.
She turned her head slightly.
Davien Woods was now standing right in her path.
Not smiling. Not angry either. Just… bored.
“I said move,” he repeated, like it was the most normal thing in the world.
Jessica blinked once. Then looked behind her. There was space on both sides of the hallway.
“I’m not blocking anything,” she said calmly.
A few nearby students went quiet.
Davien raised a brow slightly, like he wasn’t used to being questioned.
“You’re in the way,” he said again.
Jessica crossed her arms. “No, I’m not.”
Silence.
Then—someone nearby whispered, “She’s new…”
Davien looked at her properly for the first time.
Really looked.
Like he was finally noticing she existed.
A small smirk tugged at the corner of his mouth.
“Oh,” he said quietly. “New girl.”
Jessica didn’t like the way he said it.
Like she was something interesting.
Or something temporary.
“I don’t care who you are,” she said firmly. “Just don’t talk to me like I’m a problem.”
That made him pause.
For a second.
Then his smirk deepened.
“You’ll last about a week here,” Davien said softly.
Jessica didn’t flinch.
“We’ll see,” she replied.
For a moment, neither of them moved.
The hallway felt quieter than before.
Like everyone was waiting for something to happen.
Then Davien stepped aside.
But as Jessica walked past him, she heard him say one last thing—low, almost amused:
“Welcome to chaos.”
Jessica kept walking.
But for some reason… her heart didn’t feel as steady as before.
And behind her, Davien Woods was still watching.
Like she was the beginning of something he hadn’t planned for.
