It all started with a blog by Dustedoff: Ten English-language films for lovers of Hindi cinema.
Among the films listed in the blog, there was this one that caught my attention: The Shop Around the Corner. Mainly because it wasn't ever adapted into Bollywood, and the theme was super interesting.
Then I found out that it already had a fairly modern remake, the popular romcom: You've Got Mail.
They were adapted from a Hungarian play as well, namely Parfumerie.
I watched both of them (didn't yet watch another remake, Good Old Summertime), loved both of them (The Shop Around the Corner won by a slight margin), and thought of Indianizing the concept of anonymous pen pals who are sworn enemies in real life.
This is how Correspondents came into being.
Correspondents wasn't meant to be a novella, though - it started as a Hindi screenplay. But since there are no popular means to publish screenplays for public interest, I decided to write it here. If the writing feels too dialogue-heavy, this is why.
While the theme stays the same, I've tried to include many original plot points that stray from the inspirations. So, is this story a blatant copy? Absolutely not. Writing this story actually boosted my creativity and helped the plot move forward - something I've always found challenging.
Correspondents is my first work, and I hope you find it enjoyable enough to shower some love (and constructive criticism too)!
