The apartment was dark except for the soft glow of the kitchen light

Daniela sat on the floor beside the couch, knees pulled to her chest,eyes red from crying.Sophia sat across from her, quiet,sleeves covering her hands.

Neither of them had spoken in a while.

"You don't have to stay up with me" Daniela whispered eventually.

Sophia looked up."I'm not tired."

Lie

Daniela gave a weak smile."You always say that."

Sophia shrugged,looking away before Daniela could read her face too well.

Because if Daniela looked long enough, she'd see it.

The exhaustion.
The emptiness.
The thoughts Sophia could never explain without sounding pathetic.

"You've been distant lately," Daniela said "Did I do something wrong?"

Sophia's heart twisted instantly."No god no"

"Then what is it?"

Sophia opened her mouth

Nothing came out

How was she supposed to explain that her own mind felt unbearable?That everyday felt heavier than the last?That she loved Daniela so much it physically hurt,yet still couldn't understand why someone like Daniela would ever love someone like her back?

So instead she smiled faintly.

"I'm okay"

Another lie

Daniela's expression fell immediately. "Soph..."

Sophia stared down at her hands. "I'm trying."

"I know," Daniela whispered

That almost made Sophia cry

Daniela moved closer until their shoulders touched. "You don't have to deal with everything alone."

Sophia laughed quietly,but it sounded broken. "Yeah."

"Yeah."

Silence again.

Rain tapped softly against the windows while Daniela leaned her head against Sophia's shoulder.

"I love you,"Daniela murmured tiredly

Sophia closed her eyes.

The words felt like guilt more than comfort now.

Because Daniela loved her honestly,fully like Sophia was someone worth keeping.

And Sophia couldn't stop thinking she was ruining Daniela just by existing.

Eventually Daniela fell asleep beside her.

Sophia stayed still for a long time,staring at nothing.

Her chest hurt.

Her thoughts wouldn't stop.

You're exhausting.
You ruin people.
You were never meant to stay.

Sophia carefully moved Daniela onto couch and pulled a blanket over her.

Daniela stirred slightly. "Soph."

"I'll be back."Sophia whispered.

Lie.

She walked into the bathroom,locked the door and slid down it with shaking hands.

Her phone screen lit up in the dark.

Sophia stared at the chat for nearly a minute before typing.

Deleting.

Typing again.

In the end,she only sent one message.

Sophia:I love you

Then she put her phone down beside her and finally picked up the kitchen knife she had stored,hidden in a nook of her bathroom.

Pulling it up to her chest,not slowly,but in a sudden move,plunging it into her heart.

Her final words being. "I'm sorry Dani."
