It was the second year of the reign of high king Peter, and for the most part, everyone in Narnia had settled into the new regime of not having to scream with terror at the sight of a snowflake. Today was a special day for the kingdom, because it was the youngest (and most loved) queen's 11th birthday.
It was a beautiful day, towards the end of summer, and Susan was trying to get everything ready for a surprise celebration. Peter was helping, though according to Susan, he wasn't helping 'nearly enough'. Edmund was tasked with keeping Lucy away from the castle for the day.
"But how am I supposed to do that?" he had asked Susan the night before.
"Well, the two of you could go see Mr. Tumnus," suggested Peter, "if you rode, the trip there would take a good portion of the morning, and the trip back would take nearly as long, even thought Mr. Tumnus isn't actually there, he'll be arriving here tomorrow, so when you and Lucy set out, say something like 'let's take the scenic route,' and then when you get there, you can say, 'looks like he's not home, oh well, might as well turn back,' Then when you get back, just lead her into the hall, and we'll all jump out and yell surprise!"
"Peter," said Edmund, "this is the very reason why you were made the high king! I'll do exactly that."
And so Edmund had put on clothes suitable for riding in, and proposed the idea to Lucy early the next morning. Lucy had obliged sportingly, and had worn a lovely light yellow dress for the occasion that wasn't nearly as fancy as some of the other clothes she wore.
The two youngest siblings had said goodbye to the eldest two, and set off for the cave that was near Lantern Waste, the place that the kings and queens had first entered Narnia.
When they had come to a fork in the road, Edmund said, "Why don't we take the scenic route, the one that has the lovely brook you like?"
"Oh, yes, lets!" said Lucy, thinking about how thoughtful her brother was, and what a lovely birthday this was turning out to be, even though she wasn't going to have a party.
When the siblings got to the brook, Lucy grinned at Edmund and dismounted. Edmund slid off his horse as well (neither of the animals were talking horses), thinking that the more time he gave Susan to prepare, the better.
The siblings sat down on the bank of the stream, and took off their shoes, dipping their toes in the water.
"This is nice," said Lucy after a moment.
"If you like frostbitten toes," said Edmund with a little smile, Narnian summers always seemed to be the perfect temperature, but whether or not the streams and rivers were was hit or miss.
"It's not that cold," said Lucy (who was right), "But that's not what I meant, I mean that it's nice to be out of the castle for a bit every now and then and just be kids."
"I know what you mean," said Edmund, looking down at the water.
Suddenly, he had a face full of it. Coughing and sputtering, he turned to see a grinning Lucy, readying her hands for another splash.
Thus ensued an epic water fight between two siblings, who also happened to be two out of four rulers of an entire country.
When Edmund and Lucy had finished splashing about and were thoroughly cold and wet, they got out of the brook, and sat on the bank in the sun for a while, watching their horses eat some grass.
"Let's walk the rest of the way," said Edmund, feeling pleased with himself for thinking up another way of stalling Lucy a bit.
"Alright," said Lucy, "I'm game."
The two siblings walked a ways, holding on to the bridles of their horses, suddenly, the wood seemed to grow thicker all at once.
"Huh," said Edmund, "I suppose I must have remembered the way wrong... That's odd, I'm usually great with directions..."
"Or perhaps the thicket just grew a bit since the last time we walked this way," said Lucy, "After all, we usually go the other way because it's quicker."
"Well," said Edmund, "we could always tie the horses up before going on, I'm sure I'm right about the way."
"Of course," said Lucy in a dreamy sort of voice, "The horses will be fine, and I've got my dagger to cut through the undergrowth."
"No need," said Edmund, "I've got a knife, Peter always say that you shouldn't use your weapons to cut away branches unless absolutely necessary."
Lucy nodded, and they set off through the undergrowth. It was slow going, with Edmund cutting away branches every once in a while to clear the way.
"I do hope that Mr. Tumnus has food," said Lucy, "It's almost lunchtime."
Edmund said nothing about this, but began to get a bit worried, even with the slow going, they should have been at the faun's house by now. But he couldn't suggest turning around to Lucy, because then she might guess the surprise.
After about ten more minutes of pushing through the dense undergrowth, Lucy said, "Edmund, I think we might be lost, we should have arrived at least half an hour ago."
"You're right," said Edmund, "Let's turn back."
Edmund turned, and Lucy shuffled around to let her brother take the lead, they began to move back along the path that they had already cleared, but it seemed to have changed.
"Edmund," said Lucy, trying not to let worry creep into her voice, "What's going on?"
"I don't know- I –hey!"
Edmund had just tripped over a tree root, but instead of falling on the forest floor, he fell through... something.
"EDMUND!" yelled Lucy, running to where her brother ought to be, then tripping and falling herself, landing with a small thud on... wood?
"L-Lucy?" said Edmund, peering around him, "Where are we? What happened?"
"Have we gone back through the wardrobe?" Lucy wondered aloud, "It's so dark in here..."
"I'm leaning against something hard," said Edmund, "I- I think it's a trunk? But there weren't any trunks in Professor Kirk's house..."
"Where's the door?" asked Lucy, fumbling around in the darkness. Her fingers caught on a latch, and she pulled on it, opening the door to the wardrobe. Edmund, Lucy, and two suitcases tumbled out of it.
"Oh dear," said Lucy, "this isn't our wardrobe at all, there's been a dreadful mistake!"
