Once upon a time, long ago, on a warm summer day, twins were born.

These twins were no ordinary twins; one was destined for a fate determined before his birth, while the other was left to struggle against destiny. This was the first seed of their separation.

That seed began to grow little by little, and from the very first moments of its growth, it separated them so that the first would open its eyes to life on the thirty-first of July, before the other saw the light.

And when it did, seventeen minutes had passed between them, so that it would begin its life on the first of August.

Then came the fateful night that changed their lives forever, Halloween night in 1981, the night when evil forces decided to take the life of one of them.

Three knocks on the door of the house in Godric Hollow, three and a pause, and laughter rose in a house inhabited by happiness despite the tense atmosphere outside.

A father trusted a friend to keep his secret, went to open the door unaware of the evil lurking behind it, the malicious intentions that would reveal it, and paid for that trust with his life.

A mother was playing with her two young children when she heard a thud on the floor. Looking outside the room, she saw her husband lying dead, approaching her, the Dark Lord.

She immediately went into her room to protect her son, who was sitting in his bed filling the house with his laughter, while the little girl was sitting by the bed playing, quiet and silent.

The Dark Lord entered the room.

"Please don't hurt him! He's just a little child! " the mother pleaded with the Dark Lord, but he had already made up his mind.

He stared at the little girl sitting there, who offered him a doll she had with her to play with, but he ignored her and approached the mother.

"Get out of my way, you filthy mudblood." the Dark Lord's voice came deep and hidden, making the two babies cry.

The Dark Lord pushed the mother away, raised his wand, and chanted. "AVADA KEDAVRA."

"No!" the mother screamed, holding herself, and stood in front of his spell to deflect it with her body, and at that moment the spell rebounded upon him.

A green light flashed in the room at that moment, and when it disappeared, the mother lay dead on the floor, and the Dark Lord had vanished for a stone would fall from it, glowing purple.

Long moments passed, during which a man in a black cloak entered. The first thing he heard was the babies crying. Then he entered the room to see the evidence of what had happened.

The little girl looked at him, tears streaming down her face, and when he looked at her, he saw in her hazel eyes a fear he had never seen before.

The man didn't stay long before leaving, and immediately, another footstep had entered the house.

And from that fateful night, the twins were separated; he was Harry Potter, the boy who lived, while she remained Avery Potter, the girl who was spared.

They shared a harsh childhood in their aunt's house under the stairs, in a squalid room barely big enough for two beds. They took turns sleeping, one on the floor and the other on the bed. Their life together was bitter, and they could scarcely recall its sweet moments.

Compared to her brother, the girl was quiet and didn't complain much. She was grateful for even the smallest things given to her, saying it was better than nothing, but she was only convincing herself of this. Inside, she was angry at the life they had lived, but she didn't complain.

She saw in her brother life and refuge that protected her from the evils of the world. She would turn to him whenever she was sad to cry on his chest and he would wipe the tears from her cheeks.

They lived as two bodies bearing one soul, even with the seed that separated them at the beginning of their lives. They lived loving each other, with no animosity between them, and he was her whole world.

Even when Hogwarts separated them, even when magic separated them, even when Harry was Gryffindor and she was Slytherin, it meant nothing to them; they remained true to the promise they had made that neither would ever be without the other.

Of course, moments of happiness don't last, and some promises are forgotten if they don't disappear. This didn't mean they parted ways, but life took its course; each had a different life, and circumstances separated them.

Harry built another life without her, with friends she didn't belong to, and she did the same, but she remained true to her promise to him. He was the only one who comforted her, even among her friends. He was the light of her eyes, the reason she saw, and her love for him was something she never withheld.

Avery stayed out of trouble for most of her life, striving to be the perfect, quiet, trouble-free girl. She lived that way throughout her life, from when Quirrell stole the Philosopher's Stone, when Chamber of Secrets was opened, and with Remus Lupin, whom she saw as a grown-up she could trust and feel comfortable with.

Avery didn't involve herself in her brother's problems, but when his life was on the line due to Sirius Black's escape from Azkaban, the equation changed drastically.

When she offered her blood in exchange for Harry's life, when she raised her wand in Sirius Black's face just to protect him.

Her life changed that year when she discovered that her brother had hidden from her the fact that Sirius Black was their godfather, a fact she only learned when his innocence was revealed to them both.

Since that year, that quiet girl disappeared, and was replaced by a girl who lived on fire.

It was time for her life to change and turn over a new page.

Author's note: This isn't a love story, at some point of the story the main leads would fall in love but it is not the main idea or plot.

This story is an extreme slow burn.

Some details would be a bit disturbing for some to read due to the mention of depression, smoking, violence, and serious psychological breakdowns.

This story does not contain any smut and I hope that would be respected.
