"Nope. Nope. Nope. And lastly... NO!"

Myla sprinted through the hallways, her heart threatening to burst from her chest.

The school had descended into complete chaos.

Students and teachers who had been perfectly normal only moments ago were now attacking anyone in sight. Some beat people to death with their bare hands, while others chased screaming victims through the halls.

She didn't dare look back.

The only thing keeping her alive was the pair of school scissors clutched tightly in her hand.

The infection had spread far too quickly.

Or whatever this thing was.

Her only destination was the rooftop.

There were no AC vents up there, which meant the strange gas couldn't spread as easily. It was the only place she could think of that might still be safe.

Just as she rounded the corner, an infected student lunged at her.

"Ah!"

The impact slammed her into the wall hard enough to knock the air from her lungs.

The student's hands gripped her head, smashing it against the concrete.

Pain exploded through her skull.

The infected student smiled.

Fresh blood covered their face as saliva dripped from their mouth. Their crimson pupils stared wildly through bloodshot eyes tangled with blackened veins. Bloody tears streamed down their cheeks while more infected students staggered closer.

Myla's breathing became uneven.

Move.

With a terrified cry, she drove the scissors into the student's neck.

The blades sank deep.

The infected let out a strangled screech as she twisted the scissors free.

Warm blood splattered across her face.

The student's grip weakened just enough.

Myla shoved them away with every ounce of strength she had.

The body collapsed to the floor.

She froze.

Her hands trembled violently as she stared at what she'd just done.

...

She had stabbed someone.

A chorus of screams echoed down the hallway.

Then came the screeches.

Closer.

Much closer.

Fear snapped her back to reality.

She ran.

Every step up the staircase made her legs burn. Her lungs screamed for air, but she didn't stop. The infected were still behind her, their inhuman cries bouncing off the walls.

Just a little farther.

She reached the final flight of stairs and threw the rooftop door open before slamming it shut behind her.

Bang!

Silence.

Almost.

She collapsed onto the concrete, clutching her chest as she gasped for air.
