It wasn't the first time she had snuck out, slipping through the window in her bedroom and climbing down the vines that had made their way up the marble-like wall.

Creeping her way down to the barn at the edge of her father's property. To find the blonde cowboy waiting for her.

"I promise," he would say, his southern voice coming out thick as he wrapped the young girl in his arms. "I will come back for you. I will come back, and we will be wed, and I will love you for as long as the world turns."

Jasper always told her that they'd be wed when she was older and not the young 13-year-old girl who would follow him around to try and win his heart. The girl who would sneak out of her house when the moon was high to meet him in her family's barn every night, just like that one.

"Jasper, you are 16 years old, why are you doing this? Why are you trying to run off and join this war?" Amelie begged him, grabbing onto the front of his jacket and making him look at her. "Why are you trying to leave me?" She cried, running her hands from his chest to his hair, pulling it to make him look her in the eyes finally.

"I-I'm not, trust me, I would never leave you. And for the other thing, I can't tell you that, darling. Not, not yet, but you have to trust me. It's for the best." he whispered, his lips kissing her forehead before he let go.

Jasper snuck out the barn's side door, running down the road to meet a man in a dark Cloak to cover his Union military uniform.

"Are you sure about this?" The man asked, looking at Jasper as he climbed onto the spare horse. They needed him. Jasper was one of the few, the soldiers who had been sent out to find spies from the south had found that would succeed in the war. But he was still a child, a child who shouldn't be giving up his life.

Jasper looked back at the shadow where the barn was. The soldier's words echoed in his head, as he thought them over. Quickly he turned his eyes away from where he knew his girl was. Knowing if he didn't soon he would never look away.

"Let's just get this over with," Jasper said, turning his horse towards the road, the soldier doing the same, as they started to ride down the dark Texas road.

Neither of the teens knew they wouldn't be seeing each other again, for many lifetimes.
