THE MIRROR

Nova had always believed mirrors told the truth.

That was the problem.

She stood in front of the tall mirror in her room, turning slightly to the side, then back again. The dress she wore was soft and blue, the kind people described as effortless.

It didn’t feel effortless.

Her fingers tugged at the fabric around her waist.

Too tight.

She turned again.

Her shoulders looked wrong. Too sharp. Too wide. Something about them always bothered her, though she could never explain why.

Nova sighed and pulled the dress over her head, letting it fall onto the bed where three others already lay crumpled.

The invitation sat on her desk.

A formal event. Nothing dramatic. Just people, music, and photos that would probably end up online somewhere.

But that was enough.

Photos meant evidence.

Evidence meant proof of what she already believed.

Her phone buzzed on the table.

Lena: Did you pick a dress yet?

Nova stared at the message before replying.

Still deciding.

She glanced back at the mirror.

Still deciding felt easier than saying the truth.

Nothing ever looked right.
