Meditation

The office lights were dim, leaving the room wrapped in a soft, golden glow from the desk lamp. Outside the tall windows, the city had begun to settle into evening. The rush of the day had faded into distant traffic and the occasional passing siren.

Olivia closed the last file on her desk and rubbed the bridge of her nose. It had been a long day longer than most.

She stood slowly from her chair, her shoulders heavy with the quiet weight of responsibility. Instead of reaching for her bag or turning off the lights, she walked across the office toward the couch that sat along the far wall beneath the window.

The couch had become her small refuge during difficult days.

She slipped off her heels and set them neatly beside the coffee table before lowering herself onto the soft cushions. The couch dipped slightly under her weight as she leaned back, letting out a long breath she hadn't realized she'd been holding.

For a moment, she simply stared at the ceiling.

Her mind was still racing meetings replaying in fragments, voices from the day overlapping, decisions that would echo into tomorrow.

"Okay..." she whispered softly to herself.

Olivia shifted on the couch, turning slightly so she could sit cross legged. The fabric of the cushions was cool beneath her palms as she rested her hands on her knees.

She closed her eyes.

The city noise hummed quietly through the glass behind her. Inhale. The breath filled her lungs slowly, lifting her chest. Exhale. Her shoulders sank a little deeper into relaxation. Again. Inhale. The tension behind her eyes began to loosen. Exhale.

Thoughts tried to interrupt... emails she hadn't answered yet, tomorrow's schedule... but she let them drift past without chasing them.

Her breathing steadied.

The room grew still.

Each breath softened the sharp edges of the day, like waves smoothing rough stones along a shoreline.

Inhale. Exhale.

Minutes passed quietly as Olivia sat on the couch in the dim office, the city lights beginning to flicker on outside the window.

And for the first time all day, there was nothing she had to solve, decide, or fix. Just breath. Just silence. Just a moment that belonged only to her.

The office had grown darker, the last light of evening fading into deep blue outside the windows. Olivia remained seated cross legged on the couch, eyes closed, breathing slow and steady. The quiet had settled around her like a soft blanket.

Inhale. Exhale.

The tension of the day had nearly melted away.

The door to her office opened just a few inches. Elliot stepped inside quietly, careful not to make noise. He paused just inside the doorway, gently pushing the door shut behind him with a soft click.

He had come to check on her.

The lights were dim, and at first he thought the room was empty. Then he noticed her on the couch by the window, sitting perfectly still with her eyes closed.

Meditating.

A small smile tugged at the corner of his mouth. He loosened his tie slightly as he walked in, his footsteps slow and careful across the carpet so he wouldn't disturb her. The day had been long for both of them, but seeing her like this, finally peaceful, made him slow down even more. When he reached the couch, he stopped a few feet away. For a moment, he just watched her.
