The forest went quiet when Becky moved.

Not the peaceful quiet—
the *aware* kind.

Branches bent as she passed, thick boots replaced by padded, clawed feet that pressed deep into the snow. Her shoulders were broader now, wrapped in coarse brown fur that darkened along her spine. Rounded ears twitched atop her head, always listening. Always ready.

They used to call her **Bear** as a joke.
Now it wasn’t a joke at all.

Becky paused at the ridge overlooking the valley, breath steaming in the cold air. Her muzzle—still human enough to show a familiar scowl—wrinkled as she caught the scent of smoke.

Hunters.

Her claws flexed without thinking.

“Figures,” she muttered, voice rougher than it used to be, deeper, carrying a low growl she hadn’t fully learned to suppress.

Behind her, a small figure crunched through the snow. Gus.

She turned instantly, protective instincts roaring louder than her thoughts. One arm—too long, too strong, furred from shoulder to wrist—shot out to stop him.

“Hey. Stay back,” she said more gently this time.

Gus looked up at her with wide eyes, but there was no fear there. Just awe. The same way he looked at deer, or birds, or anything that reminded him the world could still be strange and wonderful.

“You smell mad,” he said.

Becky huffed out something between a laugh and a sigh. “Yeah. That happens.”

The change had come fast. One day she was a girl in a hockey mask, fighting the world with fire and fists. The next, she woke up feverish, bones shifting, skin burning, the virus rewriting her into something *half-wild*.

Some people said hybrids were fragile.

They had never met her.

She crouched, snow crunching under her weight, and met Gus at eye level. Her eyes—now amber-ringed, sharp—softened.

“Listen to me,” she said. “No matter what I look like? I’m still me. I still fight. And I still protect my people.”

Gus smiled. “Like a mama bear.”

Becky snorted. “Careful. I’ll own that.”

The crack of a rifle echoed from the valley.

Her ears flattened.

Game time.

Becky pulled her mask down—not to hide her face, but to remind the world who she was. Then she straightened, towering now, a bear who walked like a girl and fought like a storm.

“Stay here,” she told Gus.

As she charged down the slope, roaring loud enough to shake the trees, one thought burned clear in her mind:

*They wanted monsters.*

*Fine.*

*She’d be one—on her own terms.*
