The moment was perfect.

Perfect like the waves on the beach, perfect like the golden sun every evening as it dipped shyly into the horizon.

Rafe had been talking to Veronica for a few weeks now and despite being aware of Rafe's questionable actions, it seemed like he had changed. He'd seemed like he was more reformed. And Veronica truly believed it was because of her.

Because he had a reputation for tugging girls along with him until the string broke. Veronica knew this. She knew of all the things Rafe did to girls on the island, even her friends.

At first, she hated herself for crushing on someone like that. A dealer and an addict. Someone who lies even below trouble. But she had convinced herself he was different now. That he really liked her too.

Veronica was at a party together with Rafe, having the night that only ever lingered in the mind as she slept before this. They had spent the whole night chatting, and had just headed out to the porch for some 'privacy'. It was so picturesque, so unbelievable, Veronica almost had to shake herself.

Rafe leaned against the railing like the perfect boy he was—all pretty and clean, topped off with a smug smirk that he used to lead on other girls. But no, she was convinced he had changed. She were sure of it.

A boy like Rafe wouldn't have given her a second glance—let alone weeks— if he hadn't changed. But before Veronica could finish proving it to herself again, he leaned in and kissed her.

Everything flipped inside her. It wasn't a usual kiss she got when finding someone random to make out with. It felt like every day, every second they spent before this, being built up and placed onto her lips. Her eyes closed gently, and suddenly, she felt explosions. Explosions of light and colour and laughter. Like fireworks in the sky, flashing and snapping and popping.

It was amazing... until Veronica saw another flash— one that she couldn't feel, but more so see through her eyelids.

One that was a real flash.

She heard some giggles from behind her and quickly turned to see Rafe's friends Topper, Ruthie and Kelce behind her, smirking and recording the interaction on a phone.

She was confused. Of course she was.

Veronica turned back to Rafe, who had a sinister smirk on his face as well. "W-what?" she asked, confused, looking for answers.

From behind her, Ruthie stood and responded while grinning. "You don't really think a Kook would be interested in a Pogue like you, right?"

Veronica turned back to Rafe, scanning his features to see if this was serious, to which he just shrugged, looking proud of himself and truly devious. "Sorry, Nicky. Part of the game." Rafe said, looking like he wasn't sorry in the slightest. The nickname stung too. Not in the sting of excitement like all those weeks before this, but more like a sting of hurt.
