Chapter Five - If I'm not back in time, come look for me.

Start from the beginning

    He sniffed again. "O-okay."

I pulled him in for a hug, ignoring the sting of tears in my eyes. Was it silly of me to get emotional? I pulled back and gave him a quick peck on the forehead. "Goodbye, sweetie. And behave." I instructed him with a stern face.

"Yes, ma'am. Bye, ma." He was smiling this time, with glassy eyes.

I stood up and held out my hand for Mrs. Jones once more. "Once again, thanks so much for taking him in even though all of this was impromptu."

She took my hand, holding it with care. "It's nothing, sweetheart. Don't worry your pretty little head." She smiled.

I held up the registration paper. "I'll have this ready for you by the time I pick him up." I told her. She nodded.

"Thanks, ma. Now, we've got to go before we're late." Cyril said before he placed his hand on the small of my back and guided me down the walkway. I rolled my eyes with a smile. Leave it to me, I would've ended up staying right there, stalling.

"You know where we're headed now, right?" Mr. Blazè pulled me from smothering in my mind from my innumerable thoughts. I swallowed and nodded, not saying a word.

"You do know you're going to have to direct us there, right?" Christoph asked from the front seat. I blinked.

"Huh?" I muttered, feeling my insides twist painfully.

When Mr. Blazè touched my hand with his, I came to my senses and stared at him. "Ms. Hamilton, I have no idea why you're so terrified to get your confidentials, but I'm sure it's not that bad. Right? Everything will be fine. I just want to see what the company will be dealing with, no offense. Everyone went through this. I can't just single you out, that wouldn't be fair to the rest. Now the sooner we get over this, the better." He assured me, slowly rubbing his thumb against the back of my hand. This little action shocked me to the core.

I focused on the feel of his touch on my hand, because it honestly felt amazing and it was soothing. And I definitely needed some soothing right now. Mr. Blazè just thought that it was me being scared for him to see how I did back then in school, all of my accomplishments, but that's not the case. In fact, I couldn't wait for him to see it. I was a straight A student. However, the way to get to it was what made my heart drop straight to my toes.

The rest of the car ride was silent. So silent, that if a pin dropped, I'd be able to hear it. I swallowed. My nerves were so high on me that the corner of my eye twitched every now and again. The space in the car seemed to decrease within each second and I felt like I was about to have a panic attack, which has never happened before. Even when Thomas attacked and touched me in ways he shouldn't, I've never felt this way.

I tried to steady my breathing as my surroundings became familiar. It's the old neighborhood. I felt eyes on me, so I looked, only to see Cyril, Denzel and Mr. Blazè watching me. My brows pulled together in confusion.

"Do I have something on my face?" I questioned, feeling my face.

Denzel laughed and I somewhat envied him at that moment, because I wished that my laugh could sound that carefree and not be forced. "Nothing but beauty," He smiled. "But, we're waiting for you to tell us which house we're pulling up to."

Even with my emotional turmoil, I couldn't fight the heat that erupted in my cheeks at Denzel's subtle compliment. But, my brain finally registered what he said and my heart started beating so hard in my chest that it hurt. "Uh, um.." I trailed before clearing my throat. "It's this faded blue house, right on the left." I said and I listened as Cyril relayed my message to Christoph.
