It didn't take very long to get there. Actually, not long at all. My mouth dropped open in awe. The place was huge and undeniably beautiful. It's like everywhere we went, the person or people were luxurious.
"We're here, sweetie." I told him, grabbing his hand. "Cyril, are you coming?" I looked at him. He nodded his head enthusiastically and started to exit the vehicle.
When we got out, I allowed him to take the lead. As we walked up to the porch, I fell in love with her yard, her garden, her entire landscape. It was all so neat and well kept. I needed to know who'd done it.
I was so out of it and hypnotized by the yard that I didn't notice that Cyril had already either knocked or rang the doorbell and she'd already answered the door. She was a woman who looked no older than in her fifties. Her hair was greying, but she was beautiful anyway.
"Oh, Cyril! You didn't tell me you had a wife and child!" The woman exclaimed, bringing her hand up to her chest and feigning shock.
Cyril rolled his eyes with a groan. "Not now, ma," He whined. His mother laughed and looked at me.
"Well, hello, my dear." She smiled. "Please excuse my bad manners. I'm Mrs. Jones." She held out her perfectly manicured hand and I took it and shook it.
"I'm Kendra, a friend of Cyril and-" My introduction was cut off.
"We're interested in your homeschooling, mother. She starts work today, going to be a busy woman and I told her about your school." Cyril finished for me. I was suddenly grateful because I had no idea what to say.
Mrs. Jones smiled and as though she saw Kahlin for the first time, and she probably did, she stooped down and took his hand. "Aren't you a handsome young man. What's your name?"
"Kahlin Hamilton." He responded, sounding shy. He started to inch behind my leg.
"It's nice to meet you, darling. Are you ready to have fun today?" She asked him with an inviting grin.
Suddenly, Kahlin didn't need my leg any longer. "Fun?" He repeated as though he thought his ears deceived him.
We all laughed. "Yes, fun. I'm not boring like the other teachers." She whispered jokingly before standing up and looking at me. "I'd be delighted to teach and watch after him until you're done with work." She told me.
A smile broke out onto my face. "Thanks so much! I really appreciate it. And.." I trailed, hoping what I'm about to ask didn't seem too silly. "I have to ask. Who did your landscaping?"
Mrs. Jones looked so proud. "My friend's son. He's absolutely talented in the yard! I can give you his card, if you want it?" She suggested and I found myself enthusiastically nodding my head. "Okay, I'll grab a registration form the same time."
Cyril and I joked around about nothing in particular for the few seconds she was gone. Like she'd promised, she came back with the landscaper's card and the registration form. I took them from her and thanked her.
"Kahlin, it's time to go inside now. I have to go." I stooped down to his level, looking him in the face. I watched Kahlin's eyes get wet and my heart started to break. All of his life, he spent it by my side. He knew no one but me and he spoke to no one but me. I could understand how he must've felt.
"How long will you be gone, ma?" He sniffed. I bit my lip and wiped at his eyes.
"Only for a few hours, baby. But, don't worry. You'll have company. The triplets will be there to make you laugh and remember what the nice woman said.. you'll learn and have lots of fun." I gave him a hopeful smile.
