Chapter one.
A skinny long-brunette-haired girl picked up her backpack and sighed. This was her first day at Kapoww Academy—named after its founder, Annina Kapoww—and she was already getting bullied. Why?
Because she was the new kid.
She looked down at the piece of paper in her other hand.
Name: Mandy Elouise Ring.
Birth date: September 7, 2012.
Mother: Harriet Ring.
Father: Sean Quinn "S.Q." Ring.
Superpower: Not found.
A small girl with black hair put up sloppily in space-buns and bright brown eyes squinted into a smile walked up to Mandy and shook her hand.
"My name's Krystal. Welcome to Kapoww Academy!"
"My name's Mandy," said Mandy shyly.
"What's your superpower?"
"I. . .don't have one."
Krystal shrugged. "Well, I can teleport. Watch this!" She snapped her fingers, disappeared, and popped up behind Mandy. "Boo!" she cried, making Mandy jump in surprise.
"Woah! That's awesome," said Mandy after finding her footing again.
"Come on, I'll bring you to meet my brother!"
Before Mandy could protest, Krystal grabbed her hand and teleported.
The two girls landed in a brightly-lit white room.
Mandy felt shaken and nauseous from the teleportation, stumbling as she followed Krystal through the room.
They walked up to a kid, slightly older than them, with dark-brown hair noticeably styled and a warm face.
"Talon, meet Mandy," said Krystal. She turned to Mandy. "This is my brother Talon."
"Pleased to meet you!" said Talon, shaking her hand.
"Um, you too. What's your power?"
Talon shied away. "Well, um. . .it's a bit weird. . ."
"It's so awesome! He can shapeshift into a falcon!" Krystal interrupted.
"That's cool," said Mandy. "But why do you work here?"
"I don't work here," Talon corrected, "I help here. I'm pretty good with computers, so I come every day before Flying 101."
"What's 'Flying 101'?" Mandy asked.
"Oh, right, you're new. It's a class that trains you to fly in case you get the power," Talon replied. "Anyway, what's your power?"
Now it was Mandy's turn to shy away. "I. . .don't have one."
"Awesome!" Talon said, completely surprising Mandy. "I've never met a No-Namer!"
"A what?"
"A No-Namer," repeated Talon. "It's what Supers call people who are Supers but don't have powers. You see, when you manifest your power, you choose a new name that correlates to your power. My name was William before Talon."
"Oh," said Mandy. "'Krystal' doesn't mean "teleport.'"
"Oh, I haven't chosen mine yet," explained Krystal. "Anyway, we're gonna be late. C'mon!" She grabbed Mandy's hand, snapped, and they were gone.
"Please stop doing that," said Mandy, gripping her head to steady herself.
Krystal just sighed dreamily.
