Chapter 1
Bright lights crept through his slowly opening eyes. He wiped away the sluggish fatigue with the back of his hand and pushed himself upright. Confusion at the forefront of his mind as he looked around the unfamiliar place. Lush greenery filled as far as his eyes could see. Amongst his surroundings were colossal structures thick with richness of golden and white colours. Saphire blue pools at the base open layer of the villa-like structures. Distant black specs informed him of other people existing in this place. Coiled in a squat he pondered what to do.
'You are awake' a gentle voice said. He pivoted around to where the voice came from and looked daggers down at a creature half his own height. Lime green light radiated from the small humanoid figure. There was no mouth upon its face just two big black eyes locked into his glare. Two horns sprouted from the side of its head made from the same gleaming green matter that made up the rest of the creature. The creature was advancing towards him.
'No further' he hissed the venom pouring from out of his voice. The figure adhered to the warning and sat itself down on the grass.
'You have no need for fear I understand your bewilderment. This is an alien place you have woken up in. I will tell you all you need to know, and it should help ease you into this new world.'
He never broke eye contact. His head was spinning. Desperately he searched through the foggy canvas that was his mind for anything. Something to help anchor him to this current reality. Who he was, where he came from. Nothing came to him only vague memories of human history. In the void he thrashed trying to find something. Anything. He saw it there finally, a needle in a haystack. He struck forward grasping for the needle he felt it in his clutches as his name came to him. Dorran. The realisation of his name, or what his name used to be in another time, did not help calm the storm of questions thundering in his mind. He studied the creature before him after contemplating he decided all he could do was talk to it.
"What is this place?" he asked as he circled his hand above him to emphasize the entirety of the land. "Such a boring question you all ask us that" the creature said with the hint of disappointment lingering in the air. Dorran's face twitched in anger his eyes grew narrower. Noticing this the creature raised its hands to show he was no threat. "This place is a gift" the creature said conciliatory. "Look all around you. This is a far better place than the world you have memories of".
Am I to trust this thing?
With a queasiness he reflected on what it said. It was correct the world in the scatter of thoughts he called memories was certainly far different from what was all around him. "Aesthetically sure anyone can see that what else is different?" he jabbed. The creature let out a laugh and he was sure if it had a mouth, it would be smiling at him. "You must have been a cynical person" the creature mused. "Nope not just visually. The world you came from our understanding it was a place of cruelty and anarchy. Death, famine, lies, wars, corruption the list can go on, but I am sure you get the point. This is a world of fairness we all live by rules and help each other as a reward we are blessed with a life of peace and tranquillity."
At the word rules, scepticism solidified in his gut - like the creature had poured liquid nitrogen straight down his throat. Before a response could be spoken a sudden thunder of noise erupted in the air. The deafening blasts happened in a consistent rhythm. Dorran slammed his hands against his ears to try and prevent the noise from entering his brain.
What the fuck is that!
Frantically he surveyed the area, breaking eye contact from the creature which remained sitting, to locate a source the of noise. Just off to his left a new tower blossomed. Crimson in its colour the tower was formed of platforms reducing in size as they ascended. Each deafening blast a new level of tower sprouted from the base. How many blasts there had been he could not say, 30? Maybe 40? At the bottom base of the tower was an open archway where light went to die. From where he stood, he could see two faces of the tower, each with ominous openings. Did they descend? He didn't know. Every fibre of Dorran's body repelled him from the abhorrent structure.
"This will be easier for me to show you. Have you remembered your name, yet I don't know what to call you" the creature asked. He returned his gaze back to the creature. With his back to the tower, he could still feel its gaze on him. Goosebumps ran down his neck. That abomination of a tower at my rear this creature to my front Dorran thought. Both had him on a razors edge but the only path he seen forward was to play along with the creature and figure out what this place was. "My name is Dorran"
