'Cause Someone Says They're So

It had been a year. A year since Elphaba left, since she cut herself off, and since her and Fiyero began to live in The Lands Beyond Oz.

Elphaba paced in the small house's kitchen and dining room area. Through the window, she could see their growing garden (the food was only for her, since Fiyero no longer needed food— it just made mold grow in his straw) and the sunshine beating down. But Elphaba was far more focused on the faint emerald glow of the Emerald City in the distance. It was just a bit of light pollution, but it consumed Elphaba's thoughts like a wildfire.

There's no place like home. And she missed her home. She had missed it since she left.

A soft cream came from the doorway and Elphaba's head snapped around. It was Fiyero, leaning on the doorframe. His straw made a slight rustle as he shifted.

Elphaba let out a breath. "Fiyero."

"You're already there, aren't you?" He asked softly, pushing off the doorframe and slowly coming to stand beside Elphaba. His gaze shifted out the window, where Elphaba's eyes just were.

Elphaba froze. "I don't know what you mean. I'm here. With you. Safe."

"You are safe," He agreed. He took Elphaba's green hand in his gloved one. "But you are not alive. Not really."

"Fiyero, we survived. That has to be enough."

"It's enough for me," Fiyero replied with a sad smile. It turned joking for a second. "After all, I am self-absorbed and deeply shallow." He turned serious again. "But I have a brain that I can fill with the wonders of the world now. And you... you have a heart that can't be filled in this barren land with only me as your company. You don't smile enough. You miss Oz."

"Everyone thinks I'm dead. Everyone wants me to be dead." She shook her head.

"Not everyone wants you dead," Fiyero replied, tilting his head and raising an eyebrow as if to say, 'oh really?'

Elphaba furrowed her eyebrows. "She thinks I'm dead, Fiyero. And even if she knew I was alive, she would be angry. I left her. I stole you. I let her believe I was dead."

"But she wouldn't hate you. I know her, Elphaba. I was engaged to her, and we all were friends at Shiz. And I know you, and this year of isolation is just bringing you down. Return to Oz. Go to her. She'll help you." Fiyero held his gaze with Elphaba's. She could tell he was telling her what he truly thought.

Elphaba looked away and pressed her lips together, thinking. After a moment, she lifted her eyes back to Fiyero. She exhaled. "What will you do? If I go back, that is."

Fiyero shrugged, leaving Elphaba's side to go up to the window. "I don't know. Maybe I'll see if there's more out there. You know, beyond this... Land Beyond Oz." He turned back. "I'll be perfectly safe Elphaba, you made sure of that. I can even help you sneak back into Oz. No one's actively hunting you right now, so you'll be safe too. And I can't keep providing for you here with the barren land and my straw body."

"You're enough, Fiyero," Elphaba argued, but he interrupted.

"For your survival, yes, I am enough. But I feel like you aren't happy here. I see you pacing almost every day, Elphaba. You're looking at the green light in the distance and you know your heart belongs there and not with me here. And that makes me feel... worthless."

Elphaba joined him by the window and took his straw hand in hers again, then slowly nodded. "Okay." She exhaled heavily once more, feeling light a weight was lifted from her. "Okay."

"So you'll go back to Oz?"

Elphaba nodded. "You don't have to escort me, either. Just promise me you'll find your worth out there."

"I will. You promise you'll find your worth in there," he nodded out the window.

Elphaba smiled, the edges of her lips twitching up. "Okay. I will. I'll try."

Fiyero's lips straw broke into a smile in response. His hand squeezed Elphaba's with appreciation. "Tell Glinda I love her, okay? And always know that, even if we never see each other again, I still love you."

"And I still love you. We're just..." Elphaba trailed off.

"Finding our own way," Fiyero finished.

"Exactly." Elphaba let go of Fiyero's hand to wrap her arms around his shoulders, pulling him into a hug. "Thank you. Thank you for everything."

"No, thank you. Without you, I might have turned out as just another fish in the sea."

Elphaba gave him one last squeeze before the separated. She looked out the window again. The green light in the distance looked brighter already.

She was going back to Oz.

Hello hello, everyone. Welcome to the Great Gelphie Fanfic you've all (hopefully) have been waiting for! I'll try to stay as true to the movies/musical as possible, including the characters (hence Elphie and Fiyero splitting amicably, since I feel that's in-character).

Please comment whenever you're thinking something about the story! Comments and votes are literally the fuel that runs my writing fire. Without my readers I will burn out.

Have a wonderful day or night!
