Chapter Two ~ Practice Match

🌙

Y/n's POV

🌙

The morning came far too soon.

Sunlight was spilling through the curtains when I finally dragged myself upright, hair sticking out in every direction and eyes grainy from lack of sleep. I'd spent most of the night staring at the canopy above my bed, replaying a single, stupid image over and over again, Regulus Black's maddeningly calm face, illuminated by starlight. His smirk when he'd caught me off guard. The way he'd looked almost... no. I wasn't thinking that.

"Y/N, you alive in there?" Marlene's voice cut through the curtains, followed by the sound of her rummaging for her tie. "Breakfast ends in ten, and Lily's threatening to pour tea on you if you make us late again."

I groaned and threw a pillow in her direction. "Tell her to pour it on you instead."

Lily's laugh rang from across the room. "That's not how punctuality works, darling. Move it!"

By the time I stumbled down to the Great Hall, the morning light had turned the enchanted ceiling into a swirl of soft gold and white. Owls swooped overhead, letters fluttering down like snowflakes. The chatter of hundreds of students filled the space, the clatter of cutlery, the rustle of robes, the occasional explosion of laughter from the Marauders' end of the Gryffindor table.

James spotted me instantly. "There she is! Little Lightning returns from the dead!"

I dropped onto the bench beside him and glared. "Call me that again and I'll make sure your broom mysteriously loses its bristles before the next match."

He grinned. "Empty threats, sister dearest. You love me too much."

"Debatable."

Sirius, sitting opposite, snorted into his pumpkin juice. His dark hair fell into his eyes, but his grin was easy and reckless, the kind that made most girls at Hogwarts turn their heads and swoon. Except today, there was a faint edge to it.

"Sleep well, Y/N?" he asked, too casually.

"Fine," I lied, stabbing a forkful of toast.

Lily leaned over with a knowing smile. "Still thinking about your new Astronomy partner?"

I choked. "What? No!"

Marlene smirked. "You sure? Because you said his name in your sleep last night."

"I... what... I did not!" My cheeks flamed.

Sirius' brow arched. "Regulus?"

The table went silent for half a heartbeat. Sirius' expression darkened, all traces of humour fading.

"Stay away from him, Y/N," he said flatly.

My fork clattered onto my plate. "Excuse me?"

"You heard me." His voice was low, sharp. "He's not someone you should be spending time with."

I laughed, a brittle sound. "It's not like I have a choice. Sinistra paired us up. You can take it up with him if you're so concerned about your little brother."

That earned me a warning look. "I'm serious."

"No, you're Sirius," I muttered, rolling my eyes.

Even James couldn't stifle a chuckle at that. "Mate, she's got a point."

Lily nudged me under the table, whispering, "Touchy subject. Be nice."

I huffed, but bit my tongue. Sirius' glare softened eventually, but he kept glancing down the Slytherin table where Regulus sat perfectly composed, his hair neat, his tie straight, not a wrinkle in sight. He looked every inch the polished Black heir, surrounded by the likes of Rosier and Mulciber. When his grey-blue eyes briefly flicked toward our table, I looked away too fast.
