The first thing Lucy noticed was the silence.
Not the soft, peaceful kind that came when the world was still asleep  this was heavy, hollow, wrong.

Her hand drifted across the bed instinctively, reaching for the warmth that had always been there.

The other side was cold. Sheets smooth, untouched. No lingering heat, no faint scent of soap or aftershave. Just emptiness.

She blinked, slow and groggy, trying to piece the morning together. Maybe he'd gotten up early.

Tim wasn't the type to lie in he liked to start his mornings before the sun, coffee strong enough to wake the dead, quiet hum of the news in the background while he read reports. But still... he always kissed her before he left. Every single time.

"Tim?" she called softly, voice rough from sleep.

Nothing.

Her gaze flicked toward the digital clock on his nightstand. 6:47 AM. He'd normally already be at the kitchen table by now.

She sat up slowly, pushing the blanket aside, one hand instinctively rubbing the small swell of her belly their baby boy, restless even this early.

A faint ache tugged at her ribs. Maybe he went for a run, she thought. He did that sometimes when he couldn't sleep laced up his shoes and disappeared into the cool morning air until the restlessness faded. But even then, he always left a note.

Always.

Her feet touched the hardwood floor. Cool under her toes. The house felt colder than usual still, airless, as if even it sensed something missing.

She grabbed the soft gray robe hanging on the back of the door and slipped it on, tying the belt tight before stepping into the hall.

"Babe?" she tried again, louder this time.

The only response was the low hum of the fridge from down the hall.
Her heart started beating a little faster.

She checked the bathroom first door wide open, lights off. Toothbrush still in its holder. Razor untouched.

She moved to the kitchen next, hoping she'd find him halfway through breakfast, maybe taking a call, something normal, anything that made sense.

But the kitchen was empty.

No mug on the counter. No half-eaten toast, no jacket hanging off the chair.
The coffee maker sat unused.
No coffee meant no Tim.

Her stomach twisted.

She went to the living room next, glancing around like she'd missed him somehow like he might suddenly appear, pulling on his jacket, smiling at her for worrying too soon.

But the space was exactly how they'd left it last night: her book half-open on the couch, the throw blanket crumpled, one of Tim's old hoodies draped over the armrest.

And then her eyes caught something.
Something that made her stop breathing for a second.

On the dresser near the entryway where he kept his keys, wallet, badge everything was still there.

Badge. Wallet. Keys.
His phone wasn't.

Lucy's chest tightened. Tim never went anywhere without those things. Not even for a second.

She stood there for a moment, pulse loud in her ears. Her hands shook slightly as she picked up his badge, thumb brushing over the worn edges of the leather case. "Where the hell are you, Tim?" she whispered under her breath.
