Virat only laughed harder and tried to offer a spare protein bar to MS, only for him to wave it away, still looking rather amused.
"But, speaking of possessions, these may well be." Reaching out, MS took the gloves from Rishabh's hands and fondly stroked them. "They have suffered a lot. Rain, tears, sweat, and the shock of Sree's fielding. These were the same pair I used in the 2007 finals, too."
"They have certainly earned the right to retirement," Rishabh smiled and grabbed them back. "So, can I keep them? At least for this tournament?"
"As long as you promise not to use them! Your hands, Rishabh," MS reached out to hold the younger man's hand and measured it against his own, "are tiny compared to mine. You are swimming in those gloves. Keep them if you want to, for now, but do not use them."
He snuck a sly glance at Virat.
"Next time, Virat would take a bat to your behind right in the middle of the field, and don't even look at me for help!"
"Shucks!" Rishabh actually pouted, blinked up at MS, brain clearly buffering. "So... they do not like me, do they?"
"Mate?" Virat cut in between cackles, "They rejected you, sweetheart. But Mahi bhai is right. The next time you get up to these shenanigans during a match, you will be tossed out before you can say fiddlesticks!"
Rishabh smirked again. "Then I would not say fiddlesticks?"
MS sighed again, though his lips twitched faintly. "You do not need luck, Rishabh. You are pretty brilliant. You just need to stop experimenting with stupidity, especially when it involves things that are almost fossils."
Yet again, Virat lost it completely, clutching his stomach. He would have a bad stomach cramp at this point.
Rishabh folded his arms and kept smirking, "Well, they looked good on me."
"Maybe. But not when you are keeping to Bumrah. Capice? And stop stealing things. I am sure that you swiped them off Sonu when he visited."
Rishabh groaned. "How do you always know? But regardless, I am still your biggest fan!"
MS reached out to ruffle Rishabh's hair. "So be that. Without....borrowing my gloves."
"Especially now that you have been caught red-handed!" Virat quipped, making Rishabh snark back with a,
"Bad joke, Virat bhai."
"Well, I have another! Disinfect them, glove thief."
It was at this lovely moment that Hardik walked in, looked around, and grinned,
"Wait, now who is the glove thief? I swear I only borrowed Rohit's socks this morning."
"You did what?" Virat crinkled his nose. "And yeah, this boy wanted some more of his Mahi bhai's love and borrowed his gloves!"
"Almost making us lose the match in the process?"
"Uh huh."
Hardik's eyes widened mischievously. "Gloves or love, bro? I heard 'love thief. Ain't a glove almost as dear as a ring?'"
It was too late. Hardik had already started singing.
"Love thief, love thief, stealing from Mahi bhai!"
"Aiming for his heart, but ending up with his gloves.
Love thief! He is a love thief!"
Virat again fell over, and MS just rubbed his temples.
"I'm too old for this nonsense," he muttered, walking off.
"See?" Virat wheezed between laughs. "Now that is your acknowledgment! You have managed to retain the gloves and skip a MS Dhoni lecture. Double the luck, Rishabh Pant!"
Rishabh facepalmed. "I hate all of you."
Next morning
"Er... Mahi bhai?"
"Haan, Cheeku?"
"Rishabh apparently twisted his little finger yesterday and realised only today. He has started sulking again, Bhai! Now he says your gloves cursed him."
MS did not even look up. "They curse anyone who lacks even an iota of brain in that cranium they call their head."
"Ohhhhh! That's a personal attack!" Virat teased.
"Exactly," MS replied, serene as ever, and went back to polishing his bat. Whatever patience he had had, he had exhausted it yesterday.
Today, he needed something other than the drama of relic gloves.
