The delivery room smelled like disinfectant and summer rain. A storm had rolled in over Musutafu an hour into labor, and the hospital lights pulsed faintly with each distant rumble. Inko Midoriya kept her eyes on the ceiling tiles and counted breaths the way the midwife taught her—four in, six out—until the pain crested and broke like surf.
"Almost there," the doctor said gently. "One more push, Inko-san."
She squeezed the rails, saw tears blur the sterile white above her, and pushed.
For a heartbeat the power dipped. Monitors flickered, the lights dimmed to a dusky red, and somewhere a smoke sensor coughed a soft beep even though no smoke rose. Inko barely noticed. She heard only the tiniest sound—like a match taking—and then a cry that wasn't quite a cry: a clear, bell-bright note that tingled along her skin.
They placed the baby on her chest.
Heat washed through Inko's hospital gown, not painful, not even hot—more like warmth after stepping indoors from winter. Her daughter was small and soft and impossibly strange. Where newborn skin should have been, there was a smooth, pale mask of a face, heart-shaped and framed by glossy black—no, not hair, something like a cloak, thin and light as chiffon but alive, lifting in the air-conditioning's breath. Two eyes the color of coals at dawn blinked up at her. From beneath the cloak, a pair of tiny arms trembled, fingers seeking, and Inko guided them to her hand.
"Hi," Inko whispered, tears spilling. "Hi, sweetheart."
The nurse tried—and failed—to keep shock off her face. "Uh—Doctor?"
"It's a mutant-type manifestation," the doctor said, voice steady but low. Inko heard him without looking away from her daughter. "We see them at birth sometimes. Get the quirk registry kit. No sudden movements, please. And the flame blanket."
"Flame?" Inko echoed.
As if answering, the cloak fluttered once. A pinpoint puff of red light bloomed and vanished near the baby's shoulder, leaving the faintest scorch-kiss on the hospital sheet. The infant startled, and in the blink that followed she wasn't quite in the same place—an inch to the left, nestled deeper against Inko, as if the world hiccupped to accommodate her.
The nurse murmured, "Teleport...? Just a few centimeters."
"It's okay," Inko breathed, drawing the baby closer. "You're okay. Mama's here."
The warmth settled. The little mask-face relaxed. A miniature tail—pinkish, ringed, more decoration than limb—curled against Inko's forearm like a ribbon seeking a bow.

They cleaned her. They weighed her. The cloak never fully came off; it behaved like skin, like wings, like an instinct given shape. Every time the nurse lifted the stethoscope, a crescent of ember shimmered where cold metal met cloak, and the baby gave another of those bell-notes that made everyone in the room briefly, inexplicably calm.
Inko named her before the paperwork appeared. "Izumi," she said. Water spring. The nurses glanced at each other at the irony—water for a child of embers—but it felt right. Izumi, to soothe and cool the places she might burn.
By the time the registrar arrived, the storm had eased and sunlight strobed in long lines across the floor. The registrar—a woman with violet lenses and a patient smile—clicked her pen.
"Midoriya Inko. Congratulations," she said. "And congratulations, Izumi." She peered at the sleeping baby, cloak curled like petals around her. "We'll file a preliminary quirk classification. You'll be able to amend it as she grows."
"Of course," Inko said, though the words floated somewhere far away. She couldn't stop brushing her thumb over Izumi's tiny fingers.
"Observed traits," the registrar went on, reading from the nurse's notes. "Mutant-type present at birth. Mask-like cranial integument. Cloak-appendage with winglike behavior; possible protective dermal structure. Ocular glow—stable. Minor localized heat emissions. Reflexive short-range displacement under stress—potential micro-teleportation. Working name... 'Grimmchild?'"
