Because she now goes to a new school, she got her own apartment. Far away from her 'real' home, her 'parents'.
In front of her apartment door, while trying to get the key out of her pocket she notices the tired boy unlocking the door next to hers. She hurriedly gets her keys out and unlocks her door too.
Inside she drops her bag and takes her shoes off. She sighs deeply, making her way to the kitchen. There she takes a bottle of water out of the fridge. She takes a long sip of water, the cold liquid running down her throat. When she sets the bottle down she easily slides her phone out of her jacket pocket. Then she dialed her dad's number.
He picks up after the third ring.
"So, how was school?"
"Good morning to you too, School was fine. Except for the fact that you didn't even tell me that it was an all boys school. Why did you do that?"
"What are you talking about? Oh wait. I think you might have walked into the wrong building darling."
"WHAT?"
Her father chuckles slightly before taking a deep breath.
"Yeah, so your new class is in building B. Let me guess you went to building A, right?"
"Well, I mean, yeah. I thought that was the right one."
"It's fine sweetie. Well I gotta go your mom is making a complete mess in the kitchen. I'll call you back later. Bye."
"Yeah, bye."
Completely confused, Han-eul puts her phone down in the kitchen counter. She whines in frustration. What is she now supposed to do. Go back to the boys or try to go to the girls. It will be embarrassing either way. She thinks about it for a second before she hears the door bell ring. She walks up to the door and opens it. It's a kinda familiar face. He looks like the boy who was sleeping next to her today. His eyes just as confused as hers.
"Can I help you?"
"Your not Si-eun."
"Who?"
"Doesn't matter do you know where he lives?"
"I'm not even sure who your talking about."
"Oh, right okay sorry. Bye."
"What?"
And just like that the boy leaves.
Her confusion growing with each second. After a few moments she closes the door again.
...
After a few hours of studying she finally closes her book. A sigh escapes her mouth softly. Her feet carry her to the bathroom, the way feeling longer than usual.
She plashes cold water onto her face. Han-eul stares at her reflection. The image looks worse than ever. Water dropping down her chin, her hair greasy, her eyes dull and eye bags so purple you could probably confuse them with eggplants.
Her eyes tear up while looking at herself. Something she never liked about herself was that she always stands out.
S
he never fully understood why but there was a difference between her and other girls her age.
And not in the "I'm so different, I'm not like the other girls" way.
More like, she was just weird. For no reason people have always avoided her. Or maybe it had a reason. She just never knew if it had one. And she probably never will know.
She looks away quickly to stop herself from sobbing. She leaves the bathroom fastly. Han-eul goes back to her desk and grabs her phone and her headphones.
...
The cold night air is like a drug to her. Her feet move so effortlessly it's almost a joke to her, because she feels heavier than usually.
When she was younger her parents didn't really care that mich about. Typical stuff. Her mother was a lot at work and her dad just had more in common with her brother than with her. So they did a lot. It's not like Han-eul was hated or she was abused or something. She was just alone most of the time.
When she was around 5-8 she really tried to do stuff with her parents and her brother. But after some time of getting rejected it kinda snapped. She stopped asking completely and also say no to family time. Not because she didn't want to, but because she thought they where just asking out of kindness.
I mean, why would she think otherwise? They've rejected her so many timer before, why would they start to spend time together now?
Han-eul was just itself very introverted. From a young age on she was also very insecure about herself. Not only her appearance but also how she thought. Her mind. And how stupid she was.
...
After some while she passes by a small store. Inside the warmth hits her like a train. She immediately goes over and gets a pack of strawberry marshmallows. She always used to be them as a kid. They were her favorite since she can remember.
At the checkout she sees the cigarettes behind the counter. They remind her of her dad. He was always a heavy smoker. She hated it on him. And never understand why he did it.
So maybe she would now, was what she thought.
"Just this, and a pack of, uhm. Marlboro red please."
Her cheeks started to heat up and her voice cracked slightly.
The cashier was an older gentleman who was seriously looking at her.
"Aren't you a big young? Well whatever not my problem is it. You'll have your reasons."
He smiles softly before turning around and grabbing the small box.
After paying she walks out the store again. Her hands shaking slightly. Her dad would kill her if he knew. For a second she just stares at the box in her hand. Then she puts her hand into her pocket and gets out a small lighter.
Her jacket pockets were big. So she had a lot inside. The lighter was something she took from a store a few days ago. She didn't steal much, or often. Just sometimes when she couldn't handle the boredom. She lit one on fire and inhaled a little too deep. Immediately she started to choke and cough. Two familiar voices came from behind her.
" No, you have to understand bro. Just think about it."
"I already told you. No."
She turned around and saw the shy boy and the other guy who was at her door earlier.
When they spot her too she immediately drops the cigarette and steps on it.
"Ah, I can't believe it. YOU smoke? I would never have guessed that."
Says the taller one.
"Well, technically I don't. I just wanted to try what it's like."
"That's what they all say."
He continues.
"So, how long?"
"What?"
"How long have you been smoking?"
"I'm not smoking."
"But we literally ju-"
"I have to go."
She interrupts him, and starts walking away. His jaw drops slightly but she just keeps moving.

I'm not sure how I'm feeling about it yet. We'll see how she'll develop over the next chapters.
